‘Boardwalk Empire’ and ‘Modern Family’ Win At Directors Guild Awards

By Gold Derby News Desk

HollywoodNews.com: The Directors Guild of America Awards include seven trophies for achievement in television. One-time Oscar and DGA champ Martin Scorsese (“The Departed”) won his first TV race for helming the pilot of HBO’s new marquee series “Boardwalk Empire.” Allan Coulter also contended for “Empire” as did Jack Bender for the “Lost” finale, Frank Darabont for the pilot of “The Walking Dead” and Jennifer Getzinger for the much-hailed “Mad Men” episode “The Suitcase.” Another helmer on “Mad Men” — Leslie Linka Glatter — won this race last year.

Michael Spiller won for his helming of “Modern Family.” Among the Comedy Series nominees was another “Modern Family” director — Steve Levitan — as well as Beth McCarthy Miller for the live “30 Rock,” David Nutter for “Entourage” and “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy for “The Power of Madonna.” Last year, Jason Winer won for the pilot of “Modern Family.”

HBO was assured of winning the TV Movie or Mini-Series race as it swept the nominations. Emmy champ Mick Jackson repeated here for his helming of “Temple Grandin.” He edged out Barry Levinson for “You Don’t Know Jack” and three of the directors on “The Pacific” — David Nutter, Jeremy Podeswa and Tim Van Patten.
