Ricky Gervais asked to “consider” hosting Golden Globes again

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: After taking a verbal machine gun to every A-lister in attendance at the Golden Globes last month, it’s safe to say controversial comedian Ricky Gervais has absolutely no chance of returning to host the annual awards program next year, right?

Not so fast.

This is Hollywood, after all, and numbers – be it ratings or box office figures — matter. Don’t get me wrong. Ego matters, as well. But bruised feelings often can be soothed when someone gets as much press as Gervais generated in the days and weeks that followed the Globes.

And now Gervais is saying he has been approached by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and asked to consider a return.

In a diary posted to his official site, Gervais writes, “The ratings went up again, and the organizers asked me to consider a third year. I don’t think I should. I don’t know what I could do better. I certainly couldn’t get more press for them, that’s for sure. You know me. Two seasons is enough.”

The last line is a joke about Gervais’ television efforts, from the original “Office” to “Extras.” And in some people’s minds, two Gervais appearances at the Globes would be enough. But if the HFPA wants more press, I think they need to have Gervais back. Even more people would tune in next year just to see how he’d handle it.

What do you think?
