Meryl Streep mildly surprised in first-look Margaret Thatcher pic

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Meryl Streep can play anyone, so when we hear she’s taking on a new role, it’s never a question of “How will she do?” but rather, “How will she look as she’s perfecting the part?”

This morning, part of that equation is being solved.

The first image of Streep as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” has been released. It’s above, picked up from The Guardian. While just a reaction shot, it does give us an idea of Streep’s look for the film, and the sweep of Thatcher hair Streep will use to get herself in character.

A Thatcher biopic, “Iron Lady” reunites Streep with her “Mamma Mia!” director, Phyllida Lloyd. The film, which just started filming, co-stars Jim Broadbent as Denis Thatcher and Olivia Coleman as the couple’s daughter, Carol.

The Guardian says the film is billed as the story of “a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and intimate portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman.”

“The prospect of exploring the swathe cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting and exciting challenge,” Streep said. “I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses – I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own!”

Right now, “Iron Lady” has a 2011 release date in the UK, but nothing here. We’ll update you as we learn more.
