“Winter’s Bone”: usually a bridesmaid, rarely a bride

Winter's Bone

hollywoodnews.com: Stiff competition in the 2010 film season is edging out worthy contenders like “Winter’s Bone”. With an impressive 68 nominations spanning 23 recognizing entities, “Winter’s Bone” has secured 21 wins, yet few in conjunction with Hollywood’s most prestigious awards.

The plot follows a teenage girl responsible for raising two younger siblings while caring for an emotionally disturbed, unemployed mother. When she learns that her absentee father has posted their family home as bond, she goes on a journey to find him—dead or alive—before he can skip out on bail.

Despite Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nods, lead actress Jennifer Lawrence left both ceremonies empty-handed. Also up for multiple awards are her co-star John Hawkes and writer/director Debra Granik.

Among notable wins for “Winter’s Bone” are the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Best Film and Best Ensemble Cast at the Gotham Awards, and Best Actress and Best Director at the Seattle International Film Festival. At the upcoming Academy Awards, the film will compete with “The Black Swan”, “The Kids are All Right”, “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network” for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
