American Idol adds online voting

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: It’s only taken “American Idol” ten seasons to get here: starting with Tuesday’s episode, fans will be able to cast their votes online. Those with Facebook accounts registered in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will be allowed to vote up to 50 times per episode; still, traditional mechanisms such as texting and calling will remain available to viewers.
“We have been wanting to do online voting for several years, and now Facebook has offered us a secure solution and we are ready to go,” said Simon Fuller, the show’s creator. “The show has always involved a high level of engagement with its viewers through texting and phone voting, and it’s great to expand on this tradition.”
The change is expected to capture the votes of certain viewers who may not have participated in the past. It is also expected to appeal to “mega-fans”, who will find it easier to vote multiple times.
