Is “American Idol” better off without Simon Cowell?

Simon Cowell

By Kim Palacios

hollywoodnews.com: The ratings haven’t fallen as far as anticipated, which begs a single question: is “American Idol” better off without Simon Cowell? When he announced his departure last season, the world thought he was abandoning a sinking ship, yet his departure seems to have brought a revival.

The sour tone Cowell brought to the show—once thought to be its secret ingredient for success—may have been a nail in last year’s coffin. So also may have been the puzzling pick of judge Ellen Degeneres who was rich with star appeal, but who had comedic–not musical–credibility.

This year’s new recipe seems much better: one rock legend and one diva, who have been nominated for nineteen, and won four, Grammys between them. Yet, more important than their musical chops has been their ability to bring something Simon Cowell never did—Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez each have a heart.

I am enjoying Steven Tyler, but I do miss Simon because he was brutally honest when necessary and now they don’t have anyone that is willing to be that direct. Randy isn’t cutting it, if his goal is to be the bad cop! I also miss Paula, because what she felt was real, I hope she gets on X-factor with Simon.
