“American Idol” live shows are pre-taped
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: “American Idol” is a strange beast, and has been for 10 seasons. It has a live component, but it needs to fit into a blueprint for prime-time television. Which explains – to a certain extent – why producers are pre-taping performances for the supposed live shows that have aired so far this season.
Tonight’s program, for instance, has been pre-taped.
“The singers pretaped their performances on Tuesday night after the Fox network confirmed that [tonight’s] show is not quite ready to go fully live,” MTV reports.
But this reportedly isn’t the first time this has happened. And the inclusion of 13 contestants makes it even tougher for the show to fit into its time slot and make roome for performances and judge comments.
“Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe explained on Twitter, “We are pretaping for 2 weeks as we have a new Director & new judges. It has nothing to do with manipulation you morons.”
Not sure insulting your fan base is the right move, but that’s neither here nor there. News of pre-taping certainly feeds Internet speculation that “Idol” is manipulated behind the scenes, though I don’t think it’s doctored to declare a winner. I think it’s doctored to fit a TV time slot so the next show can go on as planned.
The “Idol” season continues.
