“Battle” bursts out the box-office gate

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: So much for my theory that news reports detailing the devastation in Japan could curtail ticket sales for Sony’s “Battle: Los Angeles.”

Quite thee opposite happened Friday night, as Jonathan Liebesman’s alien-invasion flick earned an estimated $13.5 million, putting it on target for an impressive $38-$40M opening weekend, THR reports.

Disney’s “Mars Needs Moms” didn’t blast off with equal fervor.

The motion-capture animated adventure, directed by Simon Wells, grabbed nearly $1.8 million on Friday, a deadly number for the reportedly $140M family film. It’s definitely possible more families head to the theaters on Saturday and Sunday, but “Mars” has miles to go on the road to profitability.
