Josh Hutcherson makes pitch for “Hunger Games” at SXSW

By Sean O’Connell He plays the cool kid in school, the one everybody turns to when the world needs saving. But “Detention” star Josh Hutcherson, who was in Austin Sunday night for the teen-horror-time-travel flick’s world premiere, is setting his sights on a different franchise.

“I love Peeta,” Hutcherson said of the heroic character in Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games” trilogy.

“The character is so much who I am — self deprecating, a people person. And he’d be such a great character to play! Like in the third book? Oh my God,” Hutcherson went on to tell

The young actor is still riding a high from the awards-season run of “The Kids Are All Right,” and he recently wrapped shooting on the “Journey to the Center of the Earth” sequel, with Dwayne Johnson and Vanessa Hudgens. But he’s setting his sights on the “Hunger Games” franchise, which might also lure Jennifer Lawrence to the lead role of Katniss.

Making an open pitch at your world premiere is one way to catch a producer’s attentions. We’ll see if this public statement earns Hutcherson a “Hunger” job in the near future.
