Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster in “Beaver” at SXSW tonight

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: One of the most impressive “gets” for this year’s South By Southwest film festival has to be the world premiere of Jodie Foster’s The Beaver,” which will screen at the Paramount Theater to what’s sure to be a packed house tonight.

There’s a credible film angle to it. Foster’s an unquestionable talent with two commendable directorial efforts under her belt. Even without her lead actor, people would want to see what Foster would come up with as a storyteller in “The Beaver.”

But the fact that Mel Gibson is the man she chose to star in “Beaver” lends tonight’s world premiere that much more of a “oomph” on the must-see scale.

Will “Beaver” be about more than a man and his hand puppet? Will audiences be able to look past Mel Gibson’s tabloid exploits and appreciate the performer we know he can be? I believe that they can. And I believe that Gibson’s going to bare his soul and catch people off guard with his performance. I’m ready to be blown away.

I’m heading to “Beaver” earlier than I have for any other film at SXSW. This is a must-attend, and we’ll report back on the film as soon as it wraps. In the meantime, here’s the most recent trailer for Foster’s film (and not the spoofs that splice in Gibson’s now legendary rants).
