Adam Lambert ‘Glam Nation Live’ debuts at #1

By Pat Ryder
HollywoodNews.com: GRAMMY®-nominee Adam Lambert released ‘Glam Nation Live’ last week and it is already topping the charts. HollywoodNews.com has a review of this concert DVD/CD set below – but if the pop star has only had one studio album, why this new release?

Well, as anyone familiar with Lambert’s vocal prowess can tell you: you have got to see him live.

As proof, today ‘Glam Nation Live’ debuted at #1 on SoundScan’s “Top Music Videos” chart, selling 17,000 units in its first week. RCA tweeted:

@RCAPromo Congrats to @AdamLambert as ‘Glam Nation Live’ debuts at #1 on SoundScan’s music DVD charts! #GlamNation

According to an RCA press release, ‘Glam Nation Live’ has had the best debut of any release on the Music Videos chart thus far in 2011.

But do the DVD and accompanying live CD really showcase Lambert as an artist?

‘Glam Nation Live’ serves up a snapshot in time as the US leg of Lambert’s tour was drawing to a close. The popular entertainer returned to his birthstate of Indiana in late August 2010 to perform to a full house at Clowes Memorial Hall in Indianapolis.

Having personally shot and reviewed two of Lambert’s Glam Nation shows last year, I can attest that the Clowes Hall date featured on the DVD is exactly what the typical concert experience was like – which makes ‘Glam Nation Live’ a perfect souvenir for those lucky enough to have attended one of Lambert’s gigs.

Whether or not one is a fan of Adam Lambert’s brand of vocal acrobatics, it is an undeniable fact that the man knows how to put on a show. And for Glam Nation, Lambert proved that even with a modest budget (the lasers likely being the biggest expense), he could pull together a mini-rock opera of his own creation.

With a talented backing band and four dancers to support him, there is still no doubt the star of the show is Lambert. The stage can barely contain him; his presence is so big.

Lambert’s voice is best enjoyed when free from the trappings of studio overproduction, gimmicks, or layers of sound. His vocals easily flow up and down his multiple-octave range with no lipsyncing or auto-tune to help him out. And did I mention, he dances?

Directed by Doug Spangenberg, ‘Glam Nation Live’ is shot very creatively, giving viewers the ability to see the whole production from the best seat in the house.

Naysayers, forget ‘American Idol’ or the ‘American Music Awards’ or just about anything else you think you know about Adam Lambert. ‘Glam Nation Live’ proves Adam Lambert is the real deal – vocal talent, showmanship, and personality to match.

5 out of 5 stars – but don’t take my word for it – check it out yourself.

Did you get your copy of ‘Glam Nation Live’ yet? What do you think?

Thank you for the 5 star review of this spectacular DVD. I was at GNT concerts and watching GNTLIVE all the joy, exhilaration, excitement, travels, soundchecks and new friendships all come rushing back. Love it!

This review just made my day and how true it is. Seeing is believing and I saw GNT live twice and this DVD is brilliant! Can’t wait for next album and tour!

It is nice to read a positive review, but even if it wasn’t a positive review, I would still be popping on to comment that YES, you must check out this cd even you have even the slightest interest in Lambert – the vocals are simply not to be believed. This dude kills it live, and really, anywhere and always. You got to give this guy a listen peeps, he is do damn good, and IMHO, just not to be missed.

Thanks Pat! Great article and wonderful review!! I am waiting for install of my new wall mounted TV with a new Blueray dvd player – so haven’t yet seen this on DVD; but, am looking forward to it. It will be the first one I pop into that new equipment! A friend commented that she wished there had been more close-ups views of Adam on it. I saw the show live many times, so I know it’s beyond good!! I do hope there are close-up glimpses of him in the DVD?

Yes, I got my CD/DVD and it is great…..If you haven’t ordered it, I would say get it….I may get another in case this one gets scratched or something….I also seen 9 shows and will be glad when he gets to other concerts again…he is so talented……

Thanks for the great news Pat. I was wondering where on the US charts this DVD would premiere. Not surprised at all. Adam is the best and deserves all the goodness that comes his way. Nobody in the industry today gives you a performance to listen to , feel, and see, like Adam Lambert. This man is a once in a lifetime performer and his GNL DVD set is not to be missed.

“The stage can hardly contain him” – So well put. I’ve been so fortunate to hear Adam sing live more than 20 times now; just can’t get enough – the guy never misses a note!! For his many fans that couldn’t get out to see his concert this year – this DVD is perfect; great sound quality too. And sales of the DVD are skyrocketing in Canada, too – 35,000 sold in the first week in Canada, WOW!!! So happy for this uber-talented guy’s success; he truly deserves it!

Love it! The best of both worlds. Anyone who doesn’t try it is definitely missing out.

Very well-written review!! I saw both Canadian Glam Nation shows. One was close to home in Toronto & the 2nd one was a 7 hr trip away in St Jean, Qc. Adam is a true showman and he gives 120% at his shows! Incredible! I can’t wait to see him again!!

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

It was only a matter of time till everyone knew how Adamazing he is!!

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

My favorite GlamRocker is getting the great reviews that he deserves. Thank you so much for seeing Adam as the real deal as we fans see him.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

Saw him in concert in Los Angeles. Bought the DVD yesterday. Watched it this morning. AMAZING.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

I got the cd/dvd and downloaded it digitally from itunes. Just magnificent!!! Adam is the real deal! I saw his GNT in Kansas City and let me tell ya – He tore the roof off the place!!! Adam is that good! No lip-syncing, no auto-tune, just pure vocals. Adam did over 100 shows – never lost his voice, was never sick and did not cancel any of his shows. Adam is truly a gifted singer. You go, Adam!!! Yay – #1!!!! WooooHooo!!!!!!!

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

I deeply regret I saw only one show. I wanted more. I want more, now. At least the DVD provides some delicious comfort. I can’t wait for Adam’s next production. I hope such high expectations doesn’t clutch him, but he’s so professional and so spontaneously creative, I doubt anything will faze him.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

Adam is the only artist I know of that sings better live than in the studio. I was fortunate enough to attend two of the GNT concerts. I purchased the DVD/CD combo and I am ecstatic with the quality, both audio and video. Casual fans or Non Fans who purchase this will be blown away by Adam’s talent. If you liked him on American Idol, be prepared to love him after seeing and hearing this!!

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

Thankyou for your insightful, spot on review! Adam is indeed the real deal! This DVD/CD captures the essence of his powerful, well trained, exceptional voice. His dancing and body movements are as fliud and seamless as his singing. This GNT was Adam’s baby and he created it brilliantly, hands on in every aspect, with a limited budget making a visual and vocal extravaganza that’s first rate. Monte Pittman, his musical director seems to have a sixth sense, always anticipating what Adam will do when Adam’s free spirit moves him. Monte’s guitar solos are among the best in the business. The musical interlude before the iconic Sleepwalker [when Adam is changing costume] is superb and hauntingly beautiful. The gifted dancers do it justice. They also frame Adam beautifully , keeping him the focal point in their mutual numbers. Adam does own the stage, being bigger than life.I’m so glad to have this DVD/CD as a memento of seeing him live 6x. It wasn’t enough! He gets your adrenaline going with his boundless energy, mesmerises you withSoaked, Atermath and lifts you up with joy with If I Had You. He weaves love throughout the concert, the dark side and the light side, connecting us all together and most of all to him and his beautiful, compassionate spirit.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

Thank you Pat for this wonderful and accurate review of Adam’s GNT DVD/CD. You can’t find a more professional and entertaining performer than Adam Lambert today. No lip synching, just pure powerful vocals and superb dancing. I went to 50 concerts and there isn’t anyone else I want to see and hear. Adam is “the” best and I’ll be super happy when he is fully recognized as such by the music industry in the US as much he is in Canada and overseas.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

I pre ordered his CD/DVD from AO fansite, I also downloaded from I Tunes and just today I bought 2 copies one for my son and one for my daughter, they also love Adam. Adam live will blow you away and this CD/DVD is the next best thing to being there. I highly recommend buying this for yourself and/or as gifts. The man is amazing he can sing/dance and put on show live without being winded or needing any enhancement. He is the real deal.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

I saw GNT 19 times on 4 continents. (others went to many more). Even then it was nothing like enough. This entertainer is mesmerising. Thank heavens we have this fabulous dvd as a memento. And I do have a life people – I am a huge supporter of the arts generally.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

    I want this is Russia!

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

one of very few artists which sound live even more incredible than studiotaped!! I had the luck to attent 3 concerts and none was the same like the other. He always changes up and keeps every song fresh and interesting and original. Hell of an allround-talent,exeptional and.like said, the stage can barely contain him!

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

Adam Lambert is stratospheric, excellent, one of a kind, rare multi talented artist/entertainer. This man is just going to get bigger bigger, he has it all, and yes, he is the real deal! I love that I have this awesome memento of his first concert, world tour!! Watch out world, that Adam Storm is just starting!

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

@MarCurtis: I have to admit, there weren’t many “zoomed” close-ups of Adam’s face and I had heard some grumblings about that aspect of the DVD. But in reality, I think the show was shot more to give people (especially new or non fans) the whole effect of Glam Nation – the stage setup, the band, the dancers all get showcased. I imagine, as generous a performer as Adam seems to be, he must have wanted it this way (giving his talented friends some quality screen time) or it would have been edited differently. As a creative decision by the filmmaker, I didn’t take points off for it.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

I still get chills during many parts of this concert. When I saw it live, I was dancing and singing in my head for a week. This is a well done video of GNT, showcasing Adam at his best. I love how you labeled it a rock opera, which I think fits like a glove. Adam knows how to entertain you. That’s what FYI is all about.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

I love and appreciate your review of the GNT Live DVD. Adam is the only artist in past 40 yrs that I actually wanted to see more than once live. In fact I bought tickets to 4 shows and that wasn’t near enough shows. The more u see him live the more you want to see him again and again. His vocals are incredible on that stage and penetrate the entire venue. He’s captivating, mesmerizing, breathtakingly handsome and sexy. A Masterclass Showman.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

Thanks Pat for your response!! It makes perfect sense. I would certainly not want it to detract from the five star review!! Some outdoor GlamNation shows had huge jumbotrons showing close-ups of Adam and the stage. Each venue was a little different. In shows where I was up close, or could see close-ups on ‘Jumbotrons’ (both in Puyallup WA) – there was an added dimension to the experience. The DVD certainly is better than watching the youtube videos (as great as it was having them!) for quality video and audio – but still of course, everyone should experience Adam and his show(s) live if at all possible. Adam has a way of encompassing the entire venue within the show – not just the stage. The audience becomes one with the show. Adam is like The Pied Piper! I’d follow him down the rabbit hole without a second thought! LOL!!

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

oops! I replied to thank you for your response, Pat, to my comment ~ but I don’t think it got through. I did appreciate your response, and it is a fact Adam had final say in how the DVD was edited for the the final cut. We all heard that the ‘wait’ for this highly anticipated DVD/CD was so Adam had a chance to approve the final version. Big thanks goes out to those making youtube videos at every show!! Adam’s fans are great!! And, as great as it is to have those, I know the DVD&CD made w professional equipment and operators will be a lot better – the streaming of the audio from AO and radio stations was fantastic quality! So, the DVD/CD seems to be the next best thing to being physically present. And as I mentioned, I was at several venues for GlamNation. Each had it’s own nuances. The one thing perhaps the DVD will hint at, I hope, (like I said earlier, unfortunately I haven’t seen it yet!) is that being physically present ~ was like being part of the show. I sensed that Adam not only takes ownership of the stage – but the entire venue – no matter how large! The big outdoor shows had huge jumbotrons (at Puyallup I was up front AND could see the jumbotrons). Seeing Adam’s every expression and body movement is hypnotic ~ mesmerizing!

FINALLY Adam is getting the positive recognition he so truly deserves

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

It would be nice if you, guys or ladies would buy GNL and not just agree agree that GNL is #1! Everybody complaned that we can’t get Glam Nation Tour on DVD! And, how many of you, the 9,000,000 fans bought it?
Go and buy the DVD , 2 or 3 of them and after all make your comment

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

Thanks for the great review. Watching the DVD brings me back to June 15 when I saw his live show early in the tour. It was so mesmorizing and fun with the crowd. I appreciate the support you give this great artist who doesn’t have to lip sync like Britney or anyone else. I hope his next record and tour is even better. I wish he would be on TV more. Idol was great, but he should be doing the talk show circuit so he can promote this new DVD. It’s worth watching.

  • March 30, 2011 | Permalink |

Great review and absolutely true! I got to attend several of Adam’s amazing concerts last year and I’m thrilled to have this incredible DVD to keep those experiences alive. Adam is so much better singing live, his vocals blow me away. I pre-ordered the tour package from Adam Official and then bought another copy in the store. I plan to gift a few copies as well, it is money very well spent.

  • March 31, 2011 | Permalink |

Pre-ordered the DVD/CD set fr Adam’s Music Store on his site, got, and can’t stop watching and listening. The songs on the CD are even better than on “For Your Entertainment”, Adams joy in performing live shines through, I get goose bumps when listening to “If I had you”, the highs and lows in his voice are spectacular. Adam, you have gone and done it again, I am still hooked , in one of your songs, you say “I own your heart”, and you do. Thank you.

Truly, better live then recorded. His show was fantastic entertainment and kept us on our feet the entire time. Only saw the one in Louisville and he was in my head for days. I’m an avid concert goer and Mr. Lambert’s Glamnation Live was one of the tops. His stage experience really bursts through and he is there to entertain you……and he did…..LOTS!

  • March 31, 2011 | Permalink |

Watched it once with my husband, once with my daughter and her husband and now the next time it’s just for me. Best entertainer in the world today.
