Catholic League strikes out against Lady Gaga, “Judas” Lady Gaga is apparently already upsetting a few people with her upcoming music video for “Judas” where she will portray Mary Magdalene.

Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, is reportedly very against the whole thing, states HollywoodLife. “People have real talent, and then there is Lady Gaga,” Donohue says, calling the whole thing “a stunt.”

The president of the group reportedly believes that Gaga is just using Christian idolatry to further her career.

“I find Gaga to be increasingly irrelevant,” Donohue says about her music and performances, “Is this the only way to jet up her performance? This isn’t random, we are getting closer to Holy Week and Easter.”

omg are you serious i am a catholic and i go to catholic school bt seriously saying gaga is not talented is so stupid and calling her irrelevant is obviously something only an uptight guy who lives under a rock would say
lady gaga is an artist and shes the most relevant singer out there right now

  • April 8, 2011 | Permalink |

well of course she is going to release it near easter, its being released april 19, this song will have religious symbolism, and releasing it on passover makes sense to me

  • April 8, 2011 | Permalink |

You find her to be increasingly irrelevant……………..yet you make a statement about her every time she does something like this.Seems like you would just ignore her if she was so irrelevant.

  • April 8, 2011 | Permalink |

The song and video for Judas isn’t even out yet, and this man is already condemning it. How can you judge something when you know nothing about it and the song isn’t even out yet? He might find her to be increasingly irrelevant, but he is in the minority. Lady Gaga’s world-wide (Yes, I said WORLDWIDE) popularity is higher than ever and continuing to grow by leaps and bounds. As a Catholic myself, I am growing more and more disgusted with these so many relgious leaders who don’t do their research before making public statements and who also don’t practice what they preach. If this man had any brains and spent any time trying to find out what Lady Gaga is about, then he would know she preaches love, acceptance, spirituality, individualism, and self pride. She never says anything bad about anyone and encourages her fans to love each other and to spread love, not hate. She also brings up that she was brought up in Catholic schools and she credits God for her success. This man represents why the Catholic religion is losing people every year. He should just shut his mouth and not say anything until the song and video actually comes out….Then he can respectfully voice his opinion.

Clearly he knows nothing about GaGa. I love it when people start to postulate about things when they clearly haven’t done the research.

  • April 8, 2011 | Permalink |

Irrelevant , yet he’s talking about her and the single will be released on Holy Week, yes very irrelevant. The song nor clip have yet to be released and he’s already offended, he clearly jumped to a conclusion and GaGa did her job by pushing buttons, that’s a true artist 😉

Hmmm, I can’t think of anyone or anything more “increasingly irrelevant” and desperate for publicity than the Catholic League. They are stuck in a Dark Ages mindset that insists we turn to an institution (for answers to our deepest questions. Meanwhile, the 21st century is well underway and those of us looking to find God can pick up a holy text of our choosing and read it ourselves, or better yet, look within. We don’t need a group of strangers with ulterior motives filtering our information and censoring our thoughts. If anyone needs a moral compass, seek out someone near you with wisdom and compassion and ask to “borrow” theirs until you can develop your own. Don’t listen to these hacks.

its quite irony for someone who holds the position like you to criticize another fellow catholic. degrading her by calling her “talentless” already shows that maybe someone should take your position instead.

    just my thoughts.

  • April 8, 2011 | Permalink |

Ok first of all who does this guy thinks he is? Second of all if he really knew anything about Lady Gaga he would know that this is not “a stunt” but a new theme to her music which better explains her beliefs and outlook on life. And until he realizes she is an amazing artist and does not need to “jet up her performance” he will always be blinded with ignorance.

hahaha talentless my LADY GAGA HAS MORE TALEN IN ONE NAIL THAT THAN YOU could ever dream to have it hey tell me something what is worst paying MAGDALENE a every important and respectful part in the religion that a lot of people do in a lot of countries for representation of what happened yeas ago i dont thing is something bad because is a representation or is worst that some people of your religion have violated a lot of kids no just in one country well THINK ABOUT IT SO BETTER TAKE A LOOK AROUND YOU BECAUSE I DONT THINK YOU ARE AN A ANGLE THIS AMAZING SUPERHUMAN IS SHOWING THE WORLD THAT POLITICS RELIGION AND SEX HAVE ANOTHER PARTS AND MY LADY GAGA IS SHOWING ALL THOSE PARTS

  • April 9, 2011 | Permalink |

irrelivant come on would u just shut up she’s a true talented artist if you don’t like it i suggest u keep ur opinion to urself honey that’s LADY GAGA no one’s taking ur side so what the hell are u doing

  • April 9, 2011 | Permalink |

Bill Donohue should not point his finger at Lady Gaga. He’s been making a career out of “stunts” for years.

  • April 9, 2011 | Permalink |

Seriously? There are far more important issues that should be brought up. How about the victims of sexual assault and abuse from Catholic priests? What is this “Catholic League of Religious and CIVIL Rights” doing about that?

  • April 9, 2011 | Permalink |

Yes Gaga has talent BUT there are times when she pushes the envelope for unneccesary reasons. obviously her portryaing Mary will have people up in arms given her previous antics. you just don’t know what she’ll do! would anyone really have like bad romance minus the video?

  • April 9, 2011 | Permalink |

Firstly yes, Lady Gaga is a great performer. However can’t she show at least a little respect when it comes to religion? This is the second time she has gone after the beliefs of the church; in Alejandro – dressing up like a nun and flinging around a set of rosary beads like an idiot, thats not really respecting anyone.

  • April 9, 2011 | Permalink |

I for once agree with a Catholic condemnation!

I’m amazed at the support for this overt phony and money backed disease on an already crippled music industry.

She’s not original and not unique enough to warrant this…and that chip on her shoulder…wow. And talented? Please. There are plenty of people who write songs, play the piano, and sing well. There are hordes lined up in masses when American Idol comes to town for a casting call.

  • April 10, 2011 | Permalink |

As much as I dislike to say it, I actually agree with Bill. She saw how much controversy she got for Alejandro, it makes sense she’d do it again. To each their own, hopefully her fans will realize all she really, trully cares about is the fame, and nothing else. She is a great actress and a great liar. Got to hand over the award to her for that. Lady Gaga has been doing some brainwashing, it’s pretty sad to see her young fans being pulled into a very dark place. Take this from an artist… I am not going to say much more, but if you really want to know, you can take this hint to start your research.

  • April 10, 2011 | Permalink |

@Volatrix: of course she isn’t the only person in the world who can do those things, but point out any other mainstream POP artiste who can do the things she does. You probably won’t count up to 10 except you want to include pop acts that haven’t gained that much fame yet.

Calling her irrelevant is hilarious, she might have a short career and just disappear next month or next year, but as of right now? She’s probably one of the most relevant people in music. If he calls her talentless, then he obviously hasn’t watched or listened to her much, which isn’t a surprise. If she’s so irrelevant, then Alejandro and this vid that hasn’t even launched yet would hardly warrant him to lash out like this, would it?

  • April 10, 2011 | Permalink |

Free speech. She can sing what she wants. If anything is increasingly irrelevant it’s the RCC. Maybe they should worry more about child rapist priests than a musician.

  • April 10, 2011 | Permalink |

I agree with this bill donahue, the quicker America can wake up and realize were throwing away money and truly talented people for this idiot then we will go further. Lady gaga has no talent she steals all her “performances” from madonna, she’s not original she’s obnoxious and pushes the envelope because otherwise nobody would care at all for anything she does. Please wake up people. Your digging your own musical graves by supporting this waste of life. By the way she is auto-tuned, where’s all the real musicians? Please stand up.

  • April 10, 2011 | Permalink |

Guys, before defending this artist tooth and nail, you should look at what she’s really going after here – she’s a fame monster, and to achieve her ends she’s going after the really low-hanging fruit. Pop music has already been there and done that in the eighties, so she can attack a major world religion and get some press, be lauded for her supposed edginess, and not suffer any real consequences. Let’s be honest; sexualizing nuns, swallowing rosaries, and otherwise tinkering in blasphemy is not going to get her labeled as a bigot when her target’s Catholicism, or even Christianity as a whole. Imagine for a moment if she was doing this with Islam or another major religion. Imagine if she was preying on the traditions of, say, good old-fashioned shamanism of Native American origin. In the field of “edginess” she’s playing it safe; if she was doing this with almost any other world religion, she’d be labeled a bigot in a heartbeat.

Personally, I was a really REALLY big fan of GAGA but lately I’ve been noticing many things about her…She does do an awful lot of Madonna’s interpretations but at her concert I noticed how contradicting she was saying “I don’t care if you believe in God or do but this isn’t about that any religion and person is welcome” okay, I thought that was a good comment considering she doesn’t discriminate any person but really people? Why does she keep alluding to God? She would be offending both people who believe in God and those who don’t because they DON’T believe in God! SO I DO NOT GET IT…why does she keep bringing up religious affiliations to everything she does like crosses and what not, if she wants to accept any person she would not bring such a contraversial topic into her music! I am so confused but all i KNOW IS that I am on a Lady Gaga detox until she stops portraying herself as someone who loves everyone when she doesn’t . Everything she is doing so far is making me question who she really is? Is she even Catholic? and why does she say she accepts everyone if she keeps making music with lyrics like, “Jesus is my virtue but Judas is the demon I cling to,” So people. she might be a good person but I refuse to sing a song that goes against what I believe in…I love every other song she has made including papparazi and “poker face” born this way and even alejandro but this has drawn the line…WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE PEOPLE.

Lady Gaga is evil. She is satanic and inhabited by demons. That’s how she got her fame! She is despicable for using the story of Jesus to trying to pervert it in the name of “art.” This, my friends, is “crap” that she produces – the fact that she’s messing with the name of God is blasphemous. Pray that she not seduce any more innocent souls. Pray for her soul.

Gaga constantly challenges and revises contexts of visual art and performance art Visually and vocally she must be doing SOMETHING right to appeal to so many.If she uses orthodox religious iconography, as madonna did, towards expressing herself as a performer, it seems unneccessary to take it personally or to assume she meant it disrespectfully. she is merely adopting iconography that is broadly recognised by the masses. Most associate “judas’ with betrayal as a biblical narrative not as disrespected aimed at a christian diety.
