“Hop” atop “Arthur” at Friday box

By Sean O’Connell Russell Brand appeared to be beating Russell Brand as the box office got out to its early start Friday, though it was Brand’s holdover film, “Hop,” that was ahead of Brand’s newest film, “Arthur.”

The live-action Easter Bunny comedy took home an estimated $5.5 million on Friday to stake a claim on the No. 1 slot, if tracking holds, THR reports.

Brand’s “Arthur” remake, meanwhile, tracked slightly behind “Hop,” nabbing an estimated $4.5M on Friday night. It’s possible “Arthur” will pull ahead as the weekend progresses, though it’s more likely families will flock to move theaters Saturday and Sunday, giving “Hop” enough of a push to win its second consecutive weekend.

“Your Highness,’ the stoner comedy starring Oscar winner Natalie Portman and Oscar nominee James Franco, looks to have grabbed between $3.3 and $3.5M on Friday.
