“Rio” huge overseas, as well

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: “Rio” isn’t just a hit … it’s a blockbuster.

With a Sunday estimate of $40 million over its opening weekend at the domestic box office, “Rio” laid claim to the highest opening-weekend gross of 2011. That’s impressive for Carlos Saldanha and the creative team at Blue Sky (though it’s likely to be short-lived once the summer movies start opening to huge numbers).

But to truly appreciate the power of “Rio,” check out its international box. The animated film opened overseas first, and has gone on to earn an estimated $129.1M at the global box office, THR reports.

This looks to be a juggernaut for 20tht Century Fox, once you factor in the markets it has yet to reach, plus the inevitable push the family oriented film will receive on home video.
