“Fighter” mom Alice Ward passes away at 79

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Alice Ward, the feisty Massachusetts mother of Irish boxer Micky Ward, has passed away at age 79.

Ward landed on everyone’s radar last year courtesy of David O. Russell’s Oscar-winning “The Fighter.” Specifically, Melissa Leo’s portrayal of the stubborn and opinionated mom earned the long-time character actress her first Academy Award.

She had gone into cardiac arrest in January, and the family ultimately made the decision to take her off life support on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

“We lost the leader of our family,” Alice’s son, Dicky Eklund, said. “She was a great woman, a strong woman. She taught us all what it means to be strong because she never gave up on any of us.”
