Adam Lambert talks about ‘American Idol’s’ final stars

HollywoodNews.com: Adam Lambert was the runner-up in his season of ‘American Idol,’ so he seems like the appropriate person to give an opinion about the current contestants.

Lambert is currently loving Haley Reinhart and what she is doing on the show, states Billboard. “I love Haley so much because musically and vocally, she’s doing things that are at a top-notch level,” Lambert commented, adding that she doesn’t seem to be trying too hard.

However, one contestant he isn’t loving is James Durbin, who has been compared to Lambert. “I think he’s got talent and passion 100%, but I feel like he’s trying way too hard,” Lambert revealed.

First of all, I am a HUGE Adam fan – heck, I am a ‘Glambert’.. however, I am going to have to disagree with him regarding his statement about James Durbin. Unlike any other contestant (that I know of) in the show’s history, James has turrets and aspbergergers syndrome which is not easy to conceal. Also, as James stated last night.. he puts everything on the stage and will sacrafice just about all he has to create a better life for his family. As someone who has struggled to give the best life possible to my 5 kids, I can totally relate. So, I do agree with Adam about James talent, but give James major props to his ‘trying so hard’. I think it’s working!

Agree 100%. James is trying way too hard

  • May 5, 2011 | Permalink |

I agree about Haley, I am really loving her these days. As for James, he’s good but not nearly as good as what the judges say. Not a single constructive criticism of him the entire show — and last night he sang poorly IMO. But again he just got accolades. That turns me off.

I would like to disagree with commenter # 1.

I don’t think anyone will ever know just what obstacles previous contestants have had to overcome. Not everyone displays their problems on national TV.

  • May 5, 2011 | Permalink |

    Addendum to my first comment:

I’m not trying to minimize James’ life experience, just saying that many people have had hardships raising their children, illnesses, tragedy, etc, etc.

It’s on thing to own your baggage, its another to open it and use it to peddle for sympathy.

  • May 5, 2011 | Permalink |

I agree that James tries to hard and it comes across as desperation. Many people have had obstacles to overcome but don’t use their past experiences to win sympathy votes as James is doing. He’s is probably not the most talented of last remaining contestants. Jacob is far more vocally talented but he may not end up in final 2. Scotty is good but has trouble with genres other than Country as does Lauren. I think Haley has more talent than the remaining contestants and should win this thing. My pic’s Top2 Haley & Scotty.

Adam is so right about James trying too hard. I am sure he is leaving everything on the stage but so are all of them. I just don’t care for him. I just wish James was on up against Adam. You would have really seen James trying ……..very trying. I know he has problems, but dang he looks like he hasn’t showered in weeks. The hair I don’t care for. Just sign me Adam all the way and all the time!

  • May 5, 2011 | Permalink |

Of course, Adam fans are going to cling to Adam’s every word because it’s gospel. I love Adam, been to his concerts and can’t wait for his second tour, BUT I think Haley just sucks. Her stage presence is so not there. She’s got the Liza arm move that’s irritating, aside of that tiresome growl. James, on the other hand, looks comfortable. He’s not trying hard – this is what he normally does, he’s performed before an audience before. I’m sure there are many that thought and still think that Adam tried too hard too – his shrieking was a big turnoff. But I didn’t think so – it was music to me my ears. And no, James is not peddling anything for sympathy – is that the best fallback statement you have? Geez!

  • May 5, 2011 | Permalink |

Adam has a right to his opinion. He is not slamming James at all. But at this point in Idol you have to start being more critical and Haley is starting to outshine the other contestants with her strong sense of who she wants to be as an artist as well as her talent. The others need to up their game because as Randy likes to say, “Haley’s in it to win it.”

  • May 5, 2011 | Permalink |

Adam was 100% right. James tries way too hard to win it. Yes, he talked about his disease too, his child, lack of money……….hey! It is about AMERICAN IDOL and not a compassion company.
Besides, James (he’s NOT the youngest) doesn’t look very mature. I compare him with the country guy (Mc…something) and Alaina. They look way grounded and mature compared to James (he thinks he’s the winner…since top 13).

  • May 6, 2011 | Permalink |

I agree with Adam that James is coming out as trying too hard. I know he has this syndrome but that doesn’t mean he should be exempt from constructive criticism. He has a good voice but not as excellent as what the judges are trying to point out. I guess the JLo and Tyler just don’t want to say any negative things about their contestants because they want to make it appear that this season is the best season. James is good but not as good as they say he is.

  • May 6, 2011 | Permalink |

I’ve been a Glambert since Adam Lambert sang his first note on American Idol. However, I do disagree with him about James. I don’t think he is trying too hard. Can one ever really try too hard? I do think James needs a little more polish and maturity as performer, but don’t all young, new artists? OK, Adam Lambert didn’t. But most do. I think James has great talent and could have a really great career. He’s just singing his heart out and sharing his emotional journey, and, I’m sorry, but that will play well with the people who actually vote for American Idol contestants.

  • May 6, 2011 | Permalink |

JLo and Tyler are acting more like cheerleaders than judges on ‘American Idol’. They are disappointing.

Adam would be an excellent judge or mentor in any singing competition.

  • May 6, 2011 | Permalink |

Someone get Simon back on this show. As ADAM has pointed out many times … yes! Simon was TOUGH … even HARSH at times but that’s what made everyone TRY all the HARDER to be the BEST they could be …. if there is NO criticism week after week one would think … well ….. great … I must be PERFECT … I don’t NEED to improve … and that’s what’s wrong with this years judges … when it comes to James … NOT the others. Especially Haley & Jacob …. they are BOTH competition for James … so America needs to be told THEIR shortcomings & James needs to be PRAISED … so that he is going to just DO what he’s doing & he’ll get by … no matter how badly he needs GUIDANCE to cope with the music world AFTER Idol. HALEY (if America gets it RIGHT this time) is my choice for American Idol Season 10 …. JMO

PULLEEEEZE! I couldn’t agree MORE with Adam! Of the 4 contestants left, Haley OBVIOUSLY has the best chops and stage presence. At the start of this season, I had Jacob and Pia as the Top 2. When you look at who was left, except for maybe Haley, Jacob had the BEST pipes left. Scotty, James and Lauren couldn’t BEGIN to match, much less beat Jacob’s vocal ability. Plus, Jacob has a childlike, unbridled JOY when he sings.
As for Durbin….Tourettes and Aspergers back-story is getting OLD. Do we need a “Special Idol” sorta like the Special Olympics? Since when does a mild form of autism qualify one for a “free pass” on a talent show? If Simon Cowell were still on the judges panel, two things would have already occurred. One, Randy, J-Lo and Steven would all have received a well-deserved rap upside their heads for being so “indulgent” and inarticulate and TWO, Durbin would have had his screeching ass handed to him on a platter!
Phew! Thanks…I needed that. Bottom line,Adam Lambert is 110% correct, as usual!

  • May 6, 2011 | Permalink |

Wow, I certainly think some people just don’t think for themselves! First of all, I don’t think James has been pimping himself over his conditions, it’s a matter of fact that AMERICAN IDOL does this with their contestants, and these happen to be legitimate issues for James. If we didn’t know about this, could you only imagine the mean things people would be saying about his facial expressions. I’m sure it wouldn’t be anything nice. Secondly, I think it could also be said that ADAM HIMSELF tried “too” hard when he was in the competition as well. Isn’t that what they’re supposed to be doing?? As if Hayley isn’t trying to do her best either! Ha! What kind of stupidity is that?! If James wasn’t performing in the style he is, then I would think that he wouldn’t being true to himself & his own gifts. Don’t get me wrong, Adam Lambert has been the best thing since Dr. Pepper as far as I’m concerned & I’ve NEVER had a negative thing to say about him, but I can’t help but think he’s coming off as being a little catty about James Durbin. James does seem to have a good dose of humility about himself, which only endears him to me even more. And as far as the “screeching”, Adam was criticized relentlessly about it, and truth be told, he did it a LOT more of that than James does. But, loving Adam as I do, I was certainly never one of those people. And while Adam came into the show convinced of his talents, James had to have lots of encouragement before he had the guts to audition. I still love Adam, but his attitude towards James has really came off (to me) as being perhaps prideful & a little jealous. After all, what artist – especially in the league that Adam’s in – wants some newbie come in and steal his thunder? Adam wants to remain the unique artist that he is, but I don’t think slamming James is going to earn him any respect. What happened to the Adam I fell in love with that was so encouraging and full of grace? I’ll always love Adam regardless, but sorry, I’m really loving James Durbin too. And I DON’T think he’s trying to mimic Adam. I just think that’s who he is artistically. Adam would be a lot more appealing if he just simply gave James even a little kudos and wished him well. My guess is that James probably loves Adam. And for the record, I really like all four of the remaining contestants!!!

  • May 6, 2011 | Permalink |

I agree with Adam 100% and am really annoyed with the judges for not being as honest as he was. James is too talented to be coddled, and it really feels like that’s what’s being done by everyone but Jimmy Iovine. James achieved great things in spite of his disability. He should be pushed to go even further. James would do well to listen to him.

  • May 6, 2011 | Permalink |

Adam will be damned if either he loves James or if he doesn’t, since people seem to always read too much between the lines. “catty” really Dana? A bit of a homophobe remark, since cat fights apply to girls.
I also liked James at first, but he has lost it for me; he is off pitch a lot and he makes poor stylistic choices (he muse song was simply horrendous; the octave jump might have been impressive, but that was stylistically awful). I have liked Haley best before Adam picked her as his favorite, but of course I can’t admit it since I will be accused of having the same opinion as my favorite idol.

I am an Adam Lambert fan all the way, love the man and his music, have everything he has put out thus far, I think I am a Glambert, face it I am addicted. But…I disagree with him regarding James (if in fact Adam did say what was reported, he is so often mis-quoted, as are many celebrities). James has indeed worked hard to face down his individual challenges, I thnk he has done it with courage and conviction, I think he is another artist, such as Adam, who remains true to himself, and the artist he is growing to be, there is nothing artificial about this young man. I think he is wonderfully talented, it there are similarities to Adam, its just coiendience. I am drawn to James as a musical artist much the same as I was and still am to Adam, and thats what it takes for me to truely love a performer and their music. So sorry my dear Adam, I love ya, but disagree on this one. (I too like all of the contestants left, and liked some that have left, admire their courage, and Haley blew me away with “House of the Rising Sun” but my votes and support go to James)

I do not follow AI anymore but when I can I see the videos here.
    First: I MISS Simon.
Next year they don’t need anyone, I like JLo and the others but give me a brake, they are no good at all for these kids, sorry, they like everything and they are all sooo good, so magical, even S.T. is always almost in tears.
    Bring Simon back.
I have no idea who left the show this week but James is trying to much to be a rocker and to show he has a great voice….hummm, he should improve his image and be more himself since he can’t bring the past back, find new ways, be unique, original, sorry to say, he is not any of this and about his personal health problems, I do feel it must not be easy but his is the real world, a singing show and before him there were even more sad storys, so, he just needs to sing and maybe trying a bit more to be origina
He needs a bit more finesse, a cleaner look, sorry James.

    Plaese bring Simon back.

Like I said before, I don’t follow A.I. anymore but I see some videos.
    Finals: Scotty and James.
    Either way, nothing new.
I am following The Voice and hoping to see the X factor.
American Idol is predictable, boring and I am sorry for Ryan, he works a lot but the show is going down with the new judges( maybe if they try to find someone like Simon, maybe) and not enough talent or nothing new or original.
    Sorry!

Deb: please, Adam is absolutely right..James tries too hard and he does this to cover up his vocal limitations..the dude can sing but he is not on Haley’s level..I won’t insult Adam with a comparison because there is none..Adam can outsing, non-scream high notes (real effing high notes), etc.. James any day…Adam told the truth..James is good but Haley is way better and the Judges know it…

  • May 7, 2011 | Permalink |

LB, what James deals with every day, and will for every day of his life he can not put in his past, it is part of him. This is a young man who has dealt with more difficult issues in his young life than many of us do in a lifetime. I have seen alot of people with challenges of much less magnitude then he just give in and give up, this young man has not. He has put himself in front of the viewing public to be judged and criticized, with the hopes of making a better life for himself and his young family, and I admire him for it., and he is extremely. talented. James, don’t listen to nay sayers, keep being yourself regardless of the oucome of your AI experience and you will soar.

uright-just a difference of opinion, I think its great that we all have different tastes and different things we like in music, art, etc, makes the world go around and interesting, would be boring if we all thought alike and like the same things, don’t you agree?. In my comments, I meant no insult to Adam, I love the guy, don’t think he thinks anyone is less of a fan cause they disagree with him once in awhile, and I don’t really think he andJames are comparable at all, don’t think anyone can compare to Adam, but still like James . I don;t think being a fan of Adam and also of James needs to be mutually exclusive. Have a great day!

  • May 7, 2011 | Permalink |

I think some of you misunderstand what Adam means by “trying too hard”. He’s not talking about wanting to win and trying to win – they all do that. He’s talking about overdoing a performance – oversinging, which leads to intonation problems, and over-emoting, which leads to crying instead of singing. Give Adam some credit and assume his comments on performers are not completely nonsensical. I can assure you Adam is not being “catty” or worrying about competition from James. Adam is a far superior vocalist and anyone who knows anything about singing will tell you that. As for Haley, there is no question she’s a great singer, but whether or not you like her style is a personal preference.

  • May 7, 2011 | Permalink |

P.S. David Cook’s brother was dying while David was competing in Idol, and he NEVER talked about it. So I don’t think James should get “extra credit” for having a tough life.

Not much to say, except I’ve never missed an episode in 10 years!!! That being said, I am a die-hard adam fan-yes he got screwed on the title-whose cares-look what he’s doing now. All the way HALEY!!!! she’s fantastic and james second- end of discussion and oh lauren yes final 3 .

  • May 7, 2011 | Permalink |

1). Adam is 100 % right. James tries WAYYY TOOO HAAARD and he misses it! When Adam was on Idol, I was always aware that Adam was offering us a great / outstanding performance.
2). During THIS American Idol # 10, I was always under the impression that James was ONLY trying to over-shadow other contenders. James is too inexperienced to master the rules of the games; first he is NOT vocally trained:, he is rough and it shows big time. He is too young to know how to behave in a polished society.
3). Be aware: all the attention around him may turn against him because he performs worst by the week. Apparently HE IS NOT AWARE ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is because of the JUDGES: THEY DON’T DO A GOOD JOB AT ALL . The judges look good but they do NOT do a good job.

4). THERE IS ONLY ONE ADAM: ADAM LAMBERT
