Haley Reinhart’s major turnaround on “American Idol”

By Kim Palacios Haley Reinhart defied the odds last night by making it into “American Idol’s” top 3—she had been among the bottom three a total of four times since public voting began, more times than any other contestant. James Durbin, by contrast, had never been in the hot seat, yet last night he didn’t make the cut.

The development is a surprise given Reinhart’s questionable choice of “Earth Song” by Michael Jackson, for which the judges criticized her first performance. Her second song, “I (Who Have Nothing)” by Ben E. King, went over much better, as much for her vocal performance as for her emotional presence.

But, can Reinhart win the competition? Scotty McCreery may be winning by a landslide–he has never been in the bottom three and his stats as a young southern male predict him as the winner. Even Lauren Alaina, who embodies some qualities of past winners, was in the bottom two last week. By contrast, no singer fitting Reinhart’s profile has ever won.
