Is “Rocky” heading to Broadway?
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Bill Conti’s brassy “Rocky” score already is one of Hollywood’s most iconic pieces of movie music. Could it also be used to conquer Broadway?
Songwriters Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty seem poised to find out. They have teamed with Thomas Meehan to transition Sylvester Stallone’s rags-to-riches boxing drama to the stage, according to the NY Times. It’s nothing new. Meehan says the creative team has been hammering away at “Rocky” for nearly eight years, and they currently have plans to test the show in Germany late in 2012.
“It’s been a long gestation period, but it’s come to be a work that we’re really proud of,” Meehan said. “There was some worry early on — could we really make a musical out of a boxing picture? Could you make Rocky sing and dance? But when we did the reading, people were very impressed, and we’re going forward.”
Providing the German stage production tests well with audiences, the producers envision a “Rocky” show on Broadway in spring 2013.
