Mark Wahlberg confirms “Fighter” sequel, reveals plot details

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Spike TV’s “Guys Choice: awards filmed in Los Angeles over the weekend, with several celebrities attending to pick up trophies like “Funniest M.F.” (to Jim Carrey) and the “Brass Balls” award (to Keith Richards).

But in between the pats on the back, some news broke.

Accepting the trophy for “Guy Movie of the Year” for “The Fighter” was Micky Ward, Dicky Eklund, David O. Russell and Mark Wahlberg, the latter of which revealing that a sequel should happen.

“We left out the Arturo Gatti fights for a reason,” Wahlberg explained on stage, “because that’s for ‘The Fighter 2.’ We’re not going to do ‘Fighter 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8,’ but we are going to do ‘2,’ and we’re going to do the Ward-Gatti trilogy.”

Ward, who Wahlberg portrayed in the Oscar-winning film, boxed Gatti three times in 2002 and 2003, earning both men a decent payday but sending each fighter to the hospital after the brutality of the bouts. Ring magazine named the Ward-Gatti bouts Fight of the Year in 2002 and 2003.

As for the “Guy’s Choice” show, it airs June 10 on Spike TV.
