“Green Lantern” leads Friday box; race on for second place

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: The box office race appears to be for second place this weekend as Warner’s “Green Lantern” is the clear favorite to emerge victorious but “Super 8” could hold off “Popper’s Pengins” for the follow-up slot.

Martin Campbell’s “Lantern,” an origin story with Ryan Reynolds in the shiny green suit, nabbed an estimated $22 million on Friday night, and is on pace for a decent $55-60 million opening weekend.

“Popper,” however, got off to a slower start, earning an estimated $6.7 million on Friday, THR reports. J.J. Abrams’ “Super 8”,” meanwhile, took in roughly $6 million, and analysts speculate that it might stay ahead of Jim Carrey’s family comedy for the weekend.

I’m not sold. More parents might want to bring their kids to “Penguins” on Saturday and Sunday … particularly for Father’s Day. So there’s a chance “Penguins” prevails, but still loses to “Lantern” in the long run.
