Hollywoodnews.com: Looks like the international settings utilized by John Lasseter and crew in “Cars 2” helped the sequel perform admirably overseas.
Pixar’s latest, which earned the domestic box office crown over the weekend, also dethroned “Kung Fu Panda” as the No. 1 foreign box office earner for the weekend. THR reports that “Cars 2” nabbed $42.9 million overall from 18 territories, “representing a quarter of the overall market.”
The top markets, according to the trade, were Russia ($9.3 million), Mexico ($8.1 million), Brazil ($7.6 million), Italy ($5.7 million) and Australia ($5.2 million).
DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 2,” meanwhile, dropped to No. 2 with a $37 million round in 56 markets, while Todd Phillips’ “The Hangover” sequel grabbed $15.6 million to push its foreign box office haul to $283.2 million.
Think a third “Hangover” will be underway soon?
