“Transformers” tracking behind second sequel at box

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: We knew Michael Bay’s robot-on-robot blockbuster would get off to a fast start, but we didn’t know how fast. Until now.

The third “Transformers,” subtitled “Dark of the Moon,” is “expected to gross at least $38 million Wednesday in its first full day of play at the domestic box office,” which THR says would give the sequel “the best opening-day gross of 2011.”

However, as the trade notes, that puts the film on a pace behind the second “Transformers” film, which grabbed $62 million on its first day. And Paramount now is tempering expectations to come off of the last “Transformers,” which raked in a remarkable $200 million in its first five days.

Prior to “Dark,” the best single-day gross was held by “Pirates” with $34.8 million.
