“Transformers,” “Super 8” box office updates

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Some interesting box office notes have come across our desk this afternoon as we wonder where all of the blockbusters have gone this summer.

Case in point, only one film (Todd Phillips’ “The Hangover Part II”) opened north of $100 million in its debut weekend. Now, that will change once Michael Bay’s “Transformers” has its say over the July 4 weekend. But for now, it’s only “Hangover.” As for now, THR reports that the robot-versus-robot sequel has grossed an additional $21.5 million at the domestic box office on Thursday, totaling $64.7 million so far. This means the franchise is on track to grab $165 million for the weekend.

On a related note, J.J. Abrams’ “Super 8,” a tribute to the films of Steven Spielberg, passed the $100M mark on Thursday. It is a quiet hit, and one that should continue to perform well as word-of-mouth continues packing theaters.
