“Pirates of the Caribbean” 4 surpasses $1B, becomes 7th highest grossing film ever

By Kim Palacios In the six weeks since its May 20th release, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” has grossed more than $1 billion, confirmed Disney. That makes it the seventh highest grossing film in movie history, according to Box Office Mojo reports.

In fact, there are so many record-setting sequels among the top 20, it’s no wonder that movie studios forego potentially risky new projects in favor of producing films for franchises that they know can perform. In total, three “Pirates of the Caribbean”, four ‘Harry Potter”, and two “Lord of the Rings” appear in the top 20. Indeed the only film appearing in the top 20 without a sequel is “Titanic,” which grossed $1.8 billion worldwide and stands in the number two spot, behind “Avatar”.
