Giovanni Ribisi joins Gosling, Brolin and Penn in “Gangster Squad”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: With each new announcement, the cast of Ruben Fleischer’s “The Gangster Squad” grows more cool.

The excellent Giovanni Ribisi is the latest actor to toss his name into Warner Bros’ casting circle for the period crime thriller that is based on real cases ripped from the headlines of 1940s newspapers. Deadline, which reported Ribisi’s casting, says he’ll play Conway Keeler, a “cop in the group who is a master of electronics and wires.”

The group also includes Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin, the latter playing members of an elite police squad that are after Penn, who plays famed L.A. gangster Mickey Cohen. Anthony Mackie and Michael Pena round out the cast.

“Gangster Squad” sounds like a blend of “L.A. Confidential” and the new video game “L.A. Noire” … which should equal an awesome film. We’ll see soon enough.
