Oprah Winfrey, Oscar host?

By Sean O’Connell It started as a rumor. It’s gaining some steam. In time, it just might become a reality.

Oprah Winfrey just might be the next host of the Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reportedly has Winfrey “topping the list of candidates” to host next year’s show, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Columnist Bill Zwecker wrote, “Academy honchos firmly believe Winfrey could greatly expand the show’s audience,” though spokespersons for the Academy declined to comment.

Winfrey makes sense. She had a home on ABC for decades, where she also hosted a popular post-Oscar program the Monday after the show that was attended by most of the winners. Winfrey’s also free of the grind of her daytime talker, and could dedicate the time to making the show special.

And for those who question Winfrey’s Oscar roots, she was nominated for her role in “The Color Purple” back in 1985, and has appeared as a presenter at the ceremony in the past.
