“Immortals” may impress fantasy fans, disappoint others

hollywoodnews.com: “We’re young. We’re gods. We’re agile. So that’s what you’re going to see a lot of in this movie”, said Kellan Lutz, who plays Poseidon in the upcoming mythological action film, “Immortals”. Lutz joined stars Henry Cavill, Luke Evans, Freida Pinto, Stephen Dorff, and director Tarsem Singh (“The Cell”, “The Fall”) on Saturday in San Diego to promote the film at Comic-Con.
Yet, the film seems challenged by appealing to different groups–specifically, two distinct sets of fans who asked the panel starkly different questions. The fantasy crowd cared about production quality, asking questions that indicated they will be mollified by stunning wardrobe, convincing action scenes, and expert storytelling. Yet, the fan crowd (those primarily interested in the celebrities who will play in the upcoming film) was clearly most interested in screen time featuring their favorite stars. Based on what was shown, it is already clear that the latter group may be disappointed. The Comic-Con previews focused on fight scenes, and revealed costumes that left most stars’ faces obscured.
Also in question at the session was the plot focus and adherence to the original myths, given the film’s conspicuous omittal of more than ten deities associated with the Greek pantheon. Director Tarsem Singh seemed unconcerned with the omittal, saying that only so many actors at a time could be shown on screen.
The film opens on November 11th, 2011.
