Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher thriller “One Shot” gets release date

Hollywoodnews.com: The Tom Cruise empire is rolling forward again with another possible franchise debuting in just over 18 months.
Christopher McQuarrie will direct Cruise in “One Shot,” an adaptation of the Lee Child bestseller by the same name. Indiewire says the film is expected to release Feb. 8, 2013.
Cruise plays Jack Reacher, a roving retired military policeman who is brought unwittingly into conspiracy after conspiracy. In this film, he investigates the case of a military sniper accused of five murders, and finds a bottomless pit of corruption and cover-up that must be explored.
The February release date is becoming a quiet success slot for a lot of recent gritty films. It’s the same month as “Shutter Island”—another successful adaptation—and the fantastic underdog action flick “Taken” came out the last week of January. Normally it’s a dead lot between the summer and the holidays, but this could be exactly the kind of time where “One Shot” might be a bullseye.
Cruise made the commitment to play the lead in the Paramount film earlier this month. The film is actually the ninth book in a series, and the studio is hoping to build another Cruise franchise with this character. They have plenty more Lee Child books to adapt, if Cruise can nail the role.
One potential problem: Indiewire pointed out the conspicuous detail that Reacher is described as 6’5” and well over 200 pounds. Also, he’s blonde. We’ll see what McQuarrie does with that nugget—I doubt anyone will be using CGI to beef up Cruise anytime soon.
