“Final Destination 5” coming to IMAX screens

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Let’s play the numbers game. The fifth “Final Destination” film hits theaters Aug. 12, but the 3D feature will be the first in the franchise to be released on IMAX screens simultaneously with its 2D and digital screen release.

“‘Final Destination 5’ is an exciting new addition to our 2011 slate and another example of our strong and enduring relationship with Warner Bros. Pictures,” Greg Foster, chairman and president of Imax Filmed Entertainment, said in a statement.

THR notes that the horror sequel “will be rolled out on 223 domestic and international 3D digital screens.” It will be following a release pattern carved out by Warner’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” last month.

It’s uncertain how “Final Destination” will do in the format, which plays very well for films like “Potter” and Michael Bay’s third “Transformers” film. But even if the horror sequel scratches the surface of those films’ grosses, Warner will have something to celebrate.
