“The Help” holds off “Conan,” “Fright Night” at box office

Hollywoodnews.com: It’s the dog days of summer at the box office, and the four hounds released into theaters are howling in pain.
Neither “Conan the Barbarian,” “Fright Night” nor a fourth “Spy Kids” could make a dent in current box office champions “The Help” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” heading into the weekend. The Oscar hopeful and the sci-fi prequel held tight to the top two slots as Friday estimates started rolling in, posting $5.8M and $4.7M respectively.
That’s bad news for the newcomers, who tanked with early audiences and are heading toward abysmal weekend totals.
As of right now, “Spy Kids” leads the pack with $4 million for Friday, leading to what Dimension Films hopes is a $12 million weekend. That would give it a third place finish in the Top 10.
The “Fright Night” remake, despite some strong reviews, only earned $3.1 million and could struggle to top $10 million on the weekend. Same goes for the romantic drama “One Day” ($1.9M) and “Conan” ($3.7M).
