Country star Chely Wright weds girlfriend

By Kim Palacios Country music’s first openly gay performer, Chely Wright, wed fiancé and LGBT civil rights activist Lauren Blitzer this weekend. The ceremony took place at Blitzer’s aunt’s home in Connecticut, with both brides in full-length strapless gowns.

Though the couple lives in New York, where gay marriage was recently legalized, they proceeded with long-time Connecticut-based plans given the legality of gay marriage in that state. Wright was named “Top New Female Vocalist” by the Academy of Country Music in 1995; she won an OUTMusic Award in 2010, and in 2002 was named one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People.
