hollywoodnews.com: Russell Brand was in rare form on Sunday night when he spoke words in memory of the late Amy Winehouse at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The actors’ speech preceded a performance by Tony Bennett, former duet partner of Winehouse and award show performer.
Said Brand, “She was a mate of mine and tragically this year we lost her…First time I met her, she was kind of like a daft, dopey person, just wandering around a little bit crazy, like a lot of people who are drawn to big cities with a peculiar, unknowable talent…[She had] the kind of voice that Billie Holiday sung with, the kind of voice that Ella Fitzgerald sung with.”
In addition to Bennett’s performance, Brand introduced another by Bruno Mars, a tribute to Winehouse’s cover of the Zutons’ “Valerie.” Winehouse was found dead on July 23rd, 2011. Her cause of death was not immediately known.
