“J. Edgar” trailer airs tonight – AWARDS ALLEY
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: The first official trailer for Clint Eastwood’s anticipated “J. Edger” is scheduled to air tonight on “Access Hollywood,” giving us our first look at footage of Leonardo DiCaprio playing J. Edgar Hoover, the iconic (and, some would way, controversial) head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Warner Bros. appears to be ramping up its publicity campaign for Eastwood’s drama, which bypassed the traditional fall film festival circuit but will screen as part of AFI Fest in November.
The film, penned by Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black (“Milk”), covers multiple decades in Hoover’s professional career. It co-stars Dame Judi Dench as Hoover’s mother; Naomi Watts as Helen Gandy, Hoover’s trusted secretary; and “The Social Network” star Armie Hammer as Hoover’s protégé, Clyde Tolson.
Because he’s Eastwood, any film the director releases during the awards season receives heat. Teaming with DiCaprio only boosts the film’s potential awards profile. But we’ll know even more when we see the film, and tonight’s preview footage could help set the mood.
“J. Edgar” opens in limited release on Nov. 9, then expands on Nov. 11.
