Johnny Depp playing Dr. Seuss in big-screen biopic
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: He has played “Peter Pan” playwright J.M. Barrie, Gonzo journalist Raoul Duke, and a version of Stephen King’s terrified author in “Secret Window.” Now Johnny Depp’s ready to add another cherished author to his resume.
The Oscar-nominated “Pirates of the Caribbean” star will play Dr. Seuss (aka Theodor Geisel) in a live-action biopic produced by Illumination Entertainment and Infinitum Nihil, THR reports. Depp will produce and star in the picture for Universal, while Keith Bunin (“In Treatment”) has been tapped to write the script.
The trade says their take on Geisel’s life won’t drift into strange, Tim Burton-esque territories, but possibly could use animation to juice up the presentation. Currently, Universal and Illumination are putting the finishing touches on an animated adaptation of Seuss’s “The Lorax,” which opens in March.
As for Depp, this Seuss biopic joins the long list of pending projects, making us wonder when he’ll film. He’s reportedly doing “The Lone Ranger” with Gore Verbinski (if Disney can OK a budget), and has been rumored to do a fifth “Pirates” film.
