George Clooney’s Hollywood Actor Award for “The Descendants” is well-deserved – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: As we mentioned earlier in the day, George Clooney will be honored with the Hollywood Actor Award at the 15th Annual Hollywood Film Awards. The Oscar winner is being recognized for his outstanding work as a dishevelled father swinging at a few of life’s curveball’s in Alexander Payne’s stirring and heartfelt drama, “The Descendants.”

Immediately after leaving a “Descendants” press screening at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, I knew Clooney would be in this year’s awards discussion.

As I wrote at the time, the actor’s tour-de-force performance anchors Payne’s emotional journey of a man contending with some unexpected information while also trying to keep his impressionable daughters on a level surface, so to speak. “Descendants” asks Clooney to sprint through a vast array of reactions, and he takes each wave in stride. It’s a marvel to watch, and I couldn’t be more proud of the fact that Mr. Clooney will be recognized at this year’s event.

Clooney is in good company. Fellow recipients announced for this year’s gala include Michelle Williams (“My Week With Marilyn”) for Hollywood Actress Award; Christopher Plummer (“Beginners”) for Hollywood Supporting Actor Award; Carey Mulligan (“Shame”) for Hollywood Supporting Actress Award; Diablo Cody (“Young Adult”) for Hollywood Screenwriter Award; Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs”) for Hollywood Career Achievement Award; and the cast of Tate Taylor’s “The Help” for this year’s Hollywood Ensemble Award.

In addition, the following films will compete online for the Hollywood Film Award, which will be determined by public voting through Yahoo Movies: “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Cowboys & Aliens,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2,” “The Help,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Rango,” “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Super 8,” “Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon,” and “X-Men: First Class.”

The awards, presented by Starz Entertainment, will be held on Monday, Oct. 24, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
