Ben Whishaw cast as Q in Sam Mendes’ “Skyfall”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: “Skyfall” marks Daniel Craig’s third go-round in James Bond’s iconic tuxedo, but only the first time he’ll be able to interact with someone who’s integral to the franchise.

Craig’s Bond finally is getting a Q.

Ben Whishaw, star of “Perfume,” “I’m Not There” and “Layer Cake” (also with Craig), has been cast as the legendary inventor in the next Bond film, directed by Sam Mendes, THR reports. He’ll join an ensemble that already includes Dame Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, and Albert Finney.

Q has not been seen in a Bond film since John Cleese attempted the role in 2002’s “Die Another Day,” with Pierce Brosnan in the lead. Prior to that, the character had been played for decades by the irascible Desmond Llewelyn, until the actor passed away.

The notable difference with Whishaw in the role is the age. He’s 31, while Craig’s 43, making this the first time 007 is older than Q.

“Skyfall” recently began filming, as it works toward a November 2012 release date.
