“The Hobbit” trailer promises wizards, magic and a precious ring

By Sean O’Connell You shall not pass … before watching the first official trailer for Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” which finally made its way to the Internet late Tuesday night. We have it for you below in glorious HD.

“Bilbo Baggins. I’m looking for someone to share in an adventure,” promises the wizard Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen), and with that, we are off and running from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Shire to strange and mythical lands.

The enchanted song sung by Jackson’s “Hobbit” cast in the clip create a haunting mood that gels with the jokey tone of the teaser’s beginning. And Martin Freeman comes across as the ideal casting choice to play young Bilbo, who indeed embarks on an unexpected (and unforgettable) journey.

The worst part? The words that say “Next December.” Yes, it will be a full year before “The Hobbit” is in theaters, and then another full year before the two-part saga concludes in 2013. Can you be patient? This new trailer might help … or it could make the waiting even more difficult.
