Benedict Cumberbatch snags major “Star Trek” sequel role

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” sequel already ranks high on our Need-To-See list (though we’ll have to wait until 2013) until we’re able to take the next adventure with Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine), Dr. Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the crew of the Enterprise. But new casting news has us looking for a wormhole to 2013 so we can see this sequel now.

Benedict Cumberbatch has been confirmed as Abrams’ villain for the sequel, according to THR. Though some recognize him for the part he plays in Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse,” Cumberbatch also currently is redefining the role of Sherlock Holmes in the modern, BBC take on the classic detective. (If you haven’t caught up with the series yet, please do so. It’s amazing, and Cumberbatch is unreal.)

“Although sources would not comment on the character and Abrams keeping story details close to the vest, it is believed that Cumberbatch will play the movie’s villain,” the trade notes.

Cumberbatch also can be seen as Gary Oldman’s right-hand spy in “Tinker, Tailor,” and he’s lending his voice to two featured characters in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit.” To say that he’s blowing up at the moment would be an understatement. It couldn’t happen to a more talented actor.

For me, THE most talented actor out there. Could not agree with you more. A long time to wait… Plus it’s torture waiting until May for PBS to show Sherlock Series II here in the US
