“Star Trek” sequel begins principal photography

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: For a little while there, it sounded like J.J. Abrams wouldn’t be able to return to the “Star Trek” realm for an anticipated follow-up to his massive franchise reboot. The man’s busy, and on his “Super 8” promo tour, he hedged bets on coming back for “Star Trek 2.” But rest easy, Trekkies. Abrams is back in the director’s chair, and production on the sequel is officially underway.

Paramount Pictures announced that principal photography has commenced in Los Angeles, as the production eyes a May 17, 2013 release. Returning cast members include Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin. They are joined by new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.

The “Star Trek 2” script was written by Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and “Lost” mastermind Damon Lindelof.
