Indie Spirit Awards spread love to ‘Moonrise Kingdom,’ ‘Silver Linings’ – ANALYSIS

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Nominations for the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards Tuesday morning, helping to refine the ongoing Oscar race in the wake of Monday’s Gotham Awards.

Two films that generated valuable buzz at the Gothams – Benh Zeitlin’s “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” – continued to pick up key awards nominations (including Best Feature at the Indie Spirits), possibly boosting their Oscar profiles. In addition, David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook” – believed to be an Oscar frontrunner by noted Oscarologists – swayed the conversation back in its favor with multiple Indie Spirit Award nominations including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Actor (for Bradley Cooper) and Best Actress (for Jennifer Lawrence).

Outside of this year’s major-studio races, Richard Linklater’s “Bernie” helped its cause with several important nominations in major categories. And Linda Cardellini’s campaign for her work in “Return” is working. She scored a nom in a tough category.
