NYFCC gives “La La Land” Best Picture while the BFCA announces their nominees

LA-LA-LAND-title-1
The precursor season continued on yesterday, with both the New York Film Critics Circle and the Broadcast Film Critics Association getting in on the action. NYFCC and BFCA (or the Critics Choice Awards) were both big on Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, that’s for sure. Continuing the trend we’ve been seeing, also making strong showings were Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight and Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea. BFCA also saw fit to highlight other titles like Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, and Hell or High Water, to name a few. Both groups mixed it up nicely, I must say. You’ll see it all below, but just know that this is likely how it’s going to go. At least, that’s my hunch. We shall see…

Something to keep in mind before the reveal is that this is the critics group stage of the game. What they’re doing is establishing early momentum. It won’t be until the guilds chime in that we can really get a feel for things. That being said, if the next month or so is all a rush of La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight, there’s no reason to expect that anything should change when the voters change from critics to guild members. The industry doesn’t necessarily match up with the world of journalists and film criticism, but perhaps this could be the year. Time will tell. In the meantime, check out these results and sit tight for more to come!
