Previous Oscar winners will litter the race again this year

Some years, it feels like all of the Academy Award contenders are fresh faces. The hopefuls for Oscar nominations and wins are on the scene for the first time and vying to join the club. Other times, it’s a mix between old and new. Still other times, it seems like a disproportionately large amount of would be nominees and prospective winners have been there before. 2017 seems like it’s going to be one of those years. We don’t fully know how it’s going to shape up just yet, but there’s a whole host of golden statue owners who might end up thinking about making room on their mantle for more this time around. If nothing else, this is just a primer to keep in mind when the fall and winter months come calling.

Here is the list of all former winners who have something in contention this year. It’s not a totally exhaustive list, but it comes close, I think. Take a gander:

Woody Allen
Christian Bale
Kathryn Bigelow
George Clooney
Sofia Coppola
Marion Cotillard
Matt Damon
Daniel Day-Lewis
Judi Dench
Jane Fonda
Mel Gibson
Tom Hanks
Nicole Kidman
Ben Kingsley
Brie Larson
Jennifer Lawrence
Frances McDormand
Julianne Moore
Alexander Payne
Sean Penn
Brad Pitt
Natalie Portman
Robert Redford
Julia Roberts
Aaron Sorkin
Octavia Spencer
Steven Spielberg
Emma Stone
Meryl Streep
Alicia Vikander
Rachel Weisz
Kate Winslet

Let us break that down a little bit now. First up, the gentlemen. Some of the names here include Matt Damon, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Tom Hanks, just to name a few. On the other side, we have the ladies. A handful of the women of this ilk include Nicole Kidman, Brie Larson, Jennifer Lawrence, Frances McDormand, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Kate Winslet. Separately, there are some filmmakers worth mentioning. Woody Allen, Kathryn Bigelow, George Clooney, Sofia Coppola, Alexander Payne, Aaron Sorkin, and Steven Spielberg are the main names in contention. They won’t all end up making the cut, but at least one or two almost certainly will when all is said and done.

Gun to my head, if you want to look for a winner laden contender to do well again, look at The Post. That one has the added benefit of featuring Hanks and Streep leading the cast, with Spielberg in the director’s chair. Throw in a timely plot that isn’t just timeless, but also could tweak an unpopular sitting President, and that could be the sweet sauce needed to succeed. Early hypothetical frontrunners like this can sometimes crash and burn, but The Post could overcome that. We’ll just have to play the waiting game for now, as it’ll be a race to even have it ready in 2017. If it does though, watch out. Also, obviously Day-Lewis is one that you always have to assume is a threat to win. He’s just an acting god to much of the Academy.

Basically, this year has a ton of previous winners looking for another trophy, which is never a bad thing. None of this guarantees that they will end up winning or even coming close to winning, but it never hurts to already have fans in the Academy. Winning an Oscar isn’t easy, while winning multiple ones is a rare feat. Hell, some of the winners already have taken home multiple prizes, so adding another statue to the collection is even rarer. Sit tight, as the year will eventually reveal which of these hopefuls are true contenders and which will end up as just pretenders…

Stay tuned to see if any former Academy Award winners end up with another Oscar victory this time around!
