A new Trailer for “Solo: A Star Wars Story” has all your favorite characters

HOLLYWOOD HEROES™: May the Force be with you! Star Wars fans who are understandably nervous about Solo: A Star Wars Story may be able to breathe a small sigh of relief. Last night, the new Trailer was released for the film, starting up the hype train in earnest. Putting out a new Trailer right after the weekend’s other Star Wars related announcement, that this flick will be debuting at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, is our latest sign that we’re getting very close to returning to a galaxy far, far, away. You’ll be able to see this Trailer at the bottom of the post, but first…a bit about the film in question.

The movie is, of course, the origin story for Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich), infamous smuggle and fan favorite within the Star Wars universe. Here, he will be finding his way, all the while interacting with other characters you know and love. This is the official plot synopsis from Disney: “Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ an adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.” Han meeting Chewbacca for the first time, as well as his initial Lando (Donald Glover) encounter, promises to drive some into a frenzy. Ron Howard directs a script by Jon Kasdan and Lawrence Kasdan. Of course, Phil Lord and Chris Miller shot some of this before being dismissed, though they won’t be receiving credits. Supporting players in the case include Paul Bettany, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and more. John Powell composed the score, while cinematography is by the great Bradford Young.

Taking a look at this Trailer, there should be some nice moments with Chewbacca and Lando for fans to relish. Plus, just getting to see what Glover does with Lando on its own will be great. Throw in Clarke, Harrelson, and Waller-Bridge as a droid, and there’s plenty of promise here. Obviously, Howard coming on board pretty late in the game to replace Lord and Miller creates potential issues, especially if what the latter shot really conflicts with what the former was brought on to execute. My colleagues at Cannes will find out in almost exactly a month (the full lineup is being announced this week, so keep an eye out for that), so the wait won’t be too long.

Oscar has been kind to this brand since it started back up again, so there’s reason to think that Solo: a Star Wars Story is a bit of a contender, at least on the technical side. The last three Star Wars outings have all been tech nominees, though none have scored a win yet. Both of the Saga entries (Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi) have gotten into Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score, and Best Visual Effects, with The Force Awakens receiving a Best Film Editing nod as well. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story only received noms in Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. So, it seems likely enough that those two categories are in play here, with the others also potentially on the table if the final product warrants it.

We’ll know more about Solo: A Star Wars Story soon enough, but for now, this Trailer is here to whet your appetite. Late May might seem far in the distance, like the twin suns of Tatooine, but it’s closer than you think. Pour over this Trailer in the meantime, obsess over how Ehrenreich does or does not sound anything like Harrison Ford, and just bask in the knowledge that a new Star Wars property is on its way. There will be much more to say next month, but for the moment, this will have to do. Enjoy and check back soon for follow ups…

Stay tuned for more on Solo: A Star Wars Story between now and its May 25th release date!
