Oscars winning songs from Celine, Barbra and Madonna

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com:Barbra Streisand’s performance of Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star Is Born) was one of the highlights of the 1977 Academy Awards ceremony.
She was at the peak of her considerable powers not only singing a song from a movie she starred in and produced, but it was a song she had written (with Paul Williams). And, she won the Oscar for best original song to go along for the Oscar she won for acting in Funny Girl.
With today being Oscar Sunday, it seems appropriate that Showtune Sunday be dedicated to a quartet of Oscar-winning songs performed on the Academy Awards telecast. Included are Streisand’s performance of Evergreen, Madonna performing Sooner or Later from Dick Tracy and Celine Dion’s powerful performance of My Heart Will Go On from The Titanic. Then there is Celine again dueting with Peabo Bryson on Beauty and the Beast.

Brad Pitt Very Happy 48th Birthday!

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: Of course Brad Pitt first got my attention in that famous sex scene he had with Geena Davis in Thelma & Louise. That face! Those abs!
Twenty years later, Pitt is a bigger star than ever with a string of outstanding films to his credit including this year’s Tree of Life and Moneyball. He seems certain to earn his third Oscar nomination for the latter film.
I’m not just a fan of Brad’s because of his movies. He has also emerged as a staunch straight ally in the fight for LGBT equality. When same-sex marriage was passed in New York earlier this year he said: “It is encouraging that New York has joined the movement to grant equal marriage rights to its citizens. But it is each American’s Constitutional right to marry the person they love, no matter what state they inhabit. No state should decide who can marry and who cannot. Thanks to the tireless work of so many, someday soon this discrimination will end and every American will be able to enjoy their equal right to marriage.”
Let’s hope Brad is correct and that he has a very happy 48th birthday!

Kathy Griffin tells Jimmy Kimmel about her New Year’s Eve plans for CNN co-host Anderson Cooper

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: I’m going to be partying with friends in West Hollywood on New Year’s Eve so you won’t find me watching a television.
But you can be sure that the next day, I’ll be on YouTube watching the highlights from CNN’s coverage featuring the fun pair of Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper.
Kathy paid a visit to Jimmy Kimmel this week and shared a list of goals she has for this year’s broadcast:
”My first goal is to get Anderson fired. Literally before midnight, somebody from CNN just says, ‘That’s it buddy, you’re out.’”
She wants to expose a breast during the broadcast: “If I can just whip one out on CNN…”
Then there’s this: ”I’m going to probably drunk dial Wolf Blitzer.”
And this: ”I’m going to give Anderson what’s called a rohypnol.”
And finally: ”I’m going to hog-tie Ryan Seacrest and hide him in a can of peanut brittle.”

You go girl!

Ewan McGregor Talks ‘Beginners’ and gay roles: “I’m interested in sexuality and sex, relationships and love and what makes us tick.”

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: It’s great to see the terrific film Beginners getting some awards attention. It’s the story of a father (Christopher Plummer) and son (Ewan McGregor) and what happens when the father comes out late in life.
McGregor talked to Frontiers IN LA about the movie, his popularity with gay audiences and more. Here is an excerpt:
In Beginners, your character goes through a process that’s almost like a rediscovery of his father when Christopher Plummer’s character comes out at the age of 75. Did you personally discover anything about the gay community through the making of the film that you hadn’t known beforehand?
I learned a lot about American gay history, because I think Mike [Mills, the film’s director] really beautifully explores it in the montages where he’s looking back at his father’s life as a young gay man in the early ‘50s, with an aim to try to understand what that might be like and why his father made the choices that he made. He makes it very real, that history, and it doesn’t feel like a history lesson. It’s an exploration of his dad’s younger years. And then how not very long ago gay men were being thrown into the back of police trucks and arrested for going to gay coffee shops. That sort of stuff I found very interesting—how recently it happened, when it seems so long ago.
You’re a very popular actor among the gay community for many reasons, but primarily because you appear in films and roles that really speak to gay men. How do you choose which roles you take on?
Well, it’s just a very gut process really. I’m not very complicated about it—if I find a script I don’t want to put down and I like that it’s firing my imagination and I start to see myself in that role, and it’s about something I’m interested to talk about, then I’ll do it. It’s kinda as simple as that really. I try not to make it anymore complicated than that.
http://www.halamovie.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/201105/87e1e_i-love-you-phillip-morris—official-still.jpgOccasionally it does [get more complicated]—I suppose the more you do it, the more you start thinking about directors. You know, I’ve made a lot of films, and you start thinking, “Well OK, now I want to make really good films.” You try to narrow down the possibilities of them not being good, so I suppose nowadays I take more note about the directors. But then [...]

Mario Cantone marries longtime partner in NY

HollywoodNews.com: This is incredibly cool news: Mario Cantone, best known for his role of Anthony on the Sex and the City television series and feature films, announced on The View Friday that he and partner Jerry Dixon have gotten married.
They have been together 20 years – far longer than any of Donald Trump’s three marriages, either marriage of Britney Spears, or Shannon Doherty’s three trips down the aisle.
“I got married for the same reasons you did,” Mario said to co-host Joy Behar. “We’re older now. We’ve been together 20 years. After 20 years you’re like, ‘Thanks for the anti-climactic honeymoon government!’ “
He added: “It was beautiful, just my family there. I love him. He’s a good man.”

Wanda Sykes talks about having breast cancer

HollywoodNews.com: Reading my copy of People magazine a few nights ago, it was strange to be going through an interview with Wanda Sykes where the funny lady isn’t making any jokes.
That’s because Wanda was talking about her fight against breast cancer which resulted in her decision to have both of her breasts removed: “I just wanted the best odds. I made my decision because I love life.”
Wanda was diagnosed with a noninvasive type of breast cancer in February when her tissue was tested after breast reduction: “My first thought was, ‘Really? Me, breast cancer?’ I just couldn’t believe it.”
The former New Adventures of Old Christine star underwent a bilateral mastectomy in August and spent the next month healing at home with her wife, Alex.
“I was miserable,” she said. “Every day I had to change the bandages and look at it, and it was not pretty at all. I just wanted my life back.”
But she has since turned a corner and resumed performing her stand-up act.

Elton John praises NY Governor for gay marriage law

HollywoodNews.com: Singer/activist Elton John singled out New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo during his foundation’s annual benefit this week as an example for others to follow.
According to the Associated Press, Elton thanked Cuomo – who was seated in the audience – for “taking a stand in New York and making the dream of marriage equality a reality in the state.”
In July, New York became the sixth U.S. state to recognize same-sex nuptials and Cuomo was seen as instrumental in its passage.
Wednesday night was the 10th annual Enduring Vision gala for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and it raised $2 million.
Alec Baldwin, Jon Bon Jovi and Sarah Ferguson were among the celebrities in attendance.
