A Bittersweet Goodbye to Twilight at Comic-Con

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: For the very last time, Twilight fans took to the lawns outside Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con to await the franchise’s final appearance at the convention.  The staunchest fans held the line for four days and nights to guarantee front-row seats.  One group of eight friends (who also headed the line at the 2011 event) spent months planning their return, camping in shifts to hold their spots.
In honor of this, the cast came out in spades, with core players who have featured in all five films attending the panel.  Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and all seven actors from the Cullen clan joined Twilight creator (and “Breaking Dawn” producer) Stephanie Meyer on stage for a Q&A panel; close to the end of the event, nearly two dozen additional actors playing vampires from related clans were also presented on stage.  For those die-hard fans with the stamina to camp overnight, the highlight came on Wednesday via a late-night visit by some stars and the author.  Peter Facinelli and Stephenie Meyer (to name two) spent hours signing autographs and taking photos with attendees.
Yet, the day was bittersweet for fans most familiar with the event.  Giselle G., a well-known member of the fan community who had attended Twilight-related events at Comic-Con in no fewer than three previous years, was struck and killed by a car on Tuesday while crossing the street near the camping area.  One friend accustomed to seeing her each year at Comic-Con recalled Giselle as kind-hearted, saying she would never forget the way Giselle “stuck by her” and helped her manage when she was pregnant and attended the event in 2010.   Friends erected a wreath, laid flowers, and wore black armbands in Giselle’s memory.

hollywoodnews.com: “Breaking Dawn: Part I” opens in theaters exactly a month from today. Perhaps that fact is behind Summit Entertainment’s release of another round of movie stills:

Rapper Soulja Boy jailed on drug, weapons charges

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Rapper Soulja Boy (most notably of 2007 ‘Crank That (Soulja Boy)’ fame) was arrested along with four companions in Temple, Georgia early this morning. The group was riding in an Escalade that police say was pulled over for a broken tail light. Officers reported pursuing an investigation of the contents of the car after detecting the strong odor of marijuana. A search yielded the discovery of a “substantial” volume of not only marijuana, but also a firearm, in a briefcase believed to belong to the rapper.
Regardless of what belonged to whom, all five men were booked for marijuana possession and a gun charge, and have since been released after posting bond.

Actress sues Amazon for posting her true age and ethnicity on IMDB

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: An unnamed actress of Asian descent has filed a $1 million lawsuit against Amazon.com, charging that the online retailer used personal detail from her secure profile as a retail customer and leaked it (specifically, her age and her real name) to its own subsidiary, the Internet Movie Database, commonly known as IMDB.
Deliberately referred to as “Jane Doe” to protect her identity, the plaintiff alleges breach of contract, fraud, invasion of privacy, and violation of consumer rights; she further argues that her decision not to reveal her age nor her real name were deliberate, and Amazon’s alleged act of making it available to IMDB users could compromise her career. The actress believes information about her true age and ethnicity would prevent her from being considered for certain acting roles. When the actress asked that this information be removed, Amazon refused, prompting her to file the current suit.
“In the entertainment industry, youth is king,” read the lawsuit. “If one is perceived to be ‘over-the-hill,’ i.e., approaching 40, it is nearly impossible for an up-and-coming actress, such as the plaintiff, to get work…Shortly after subscribing to IMDbPro, plaintiff noticed that her legal date of birth had been [added]…revealing to the public that plaintiff is many years older than she looks.”
Amazon declined to comment.

Prosecutors to recommend jail time for Lindsay Lohan

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Prosecutors from the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office will ask Judge Stephanie Sautner to send Lindsay Lohan to jail tomorrow. According to TMZ, the office will argue that bad behavior from Lindsay during community service hours spent at the Downtown Women’s Center is in clear violation of the star’s probation, and warrants time spent behind bars.
If the judge takes the advice of the city prosecutor, she would be reneging on Lohan’s probation agreement on behalf of the state, a measure that is within the judge’s rights if she determines Lohan belongs in jail. Confusing the matter is the recommendation of the Probation Office (which reportedly says that Lohan’s actions at the Downtown Women’s Center were not in violation of her probation).
At a 10AM PST hearing tomorrow the judge will have to decide whether to accept the recommendation of the Attorney’s Office or to honor the expertise of probation officials, all taking Lohan’s overall track record into account. The event will be streamed live on TMZ.com.

Sister Wives appeal to federal judge to drop bigamy charges

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: The many wives of polygamist Kody Brown (first wife Meri, second wife Janelle, third wife Christine, and fourth wife Robyn) have asked a Utah federal judge to drop charges against them. Their complaint? Their family has been “hurt” by the looming threat of prosecution under state bigamy law.
Court papers alluded to lost jobs, a move to Nevada, and severe harm to their reputations in the wake of police investigations made more public by their voluntary rise to celebrity through TLC’s reality show, “Sister Wives.” Fourth wife Robyn is reported to have sustained an unhealthy weight loss as a result of the probe.
Though none of the family has been convicted of the third-degree felony in question (in fact, almost no one has recently been convicted on these charges), patriarch Kody Brown continues to push the issue, saying “our continued labeling as presumptive felons has proven a barrier.” Yet, their primary defense argument is far more basic than the current plea. The July countersuit they filed against the state alleges that bigamy laws are simply unconstitutional.

“Modern Family,” and dozens of other shows benefit from Nielsen’s new ratings

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Ratings giant The Neilsen Company has finally taken steps to measure complete viewership—this means factoring in not only shows watched in real time, but also those watched later, via DVR. For many shows, the new system of measurement has proven to have an enormous impact on overall ratings and, in some cases, has decided whether a show will be cancelled or can stay on the air. For this set, millions of views are happening after the show airs, on DVR.
“Modern Family” is the frontrunner—in the first two weeks of the season, an average of 4.5 million viewers watched a recording of the show some time after it aired. This allowed the original rating—of 14 million viewers—to climb to 18.5 million viewers by this method of accounting alone. Other shows that benefited greatly from the new system included “Two and a Half Men,” “Gray’s Anatomy,” and “Terra Nova,” all of which saw their overall reach bolstered by upwards of 3 million additional DVR views.
For other shows with smaller viewership, the DVR views still have a critical impact. The show “Fringe” saw a 45% boost in total viewership when DVR views were considered. Contrast the fate of ABC’s “Charlie’s Angels” with that of “Pan Am.” Both had nearly identical live viewership, but “Pan Am” had more than twice the DVR viewership of “Charlie’s Angels.” Notably, “Charlie’s Angels” has already been cancelled.

“The Walking Dead” season 2 premiere breaks records with 7.3 million viewers

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: AMC’s newest star of prime time, “The Walking Dead,” broke a 10-year old record on Sunday when it drew 7.3 million viewers and registered a 4.8 household rating. The sci-fi/suspense drama follows a band of survivors who have inexplicably survived a virus that infected the rest of the human race, relegating them to become (or to become prey of) flesh-eating zombies.
The results are astonishing, considering heightened competition for ratings and the dozens of networks and competing lineups that have emerged in the past decade, all vying to entice a finite set of viewers. Yet, the second season opener of “The Walking Dead” drew 4.8 million viewers in the adults 18-49 demographic, 4.2 million among adults 25-54, shattering the record for a single drama basic cable telecast.
“The Walking Dead is one of those rare television programs that reaches both a core genre fan as well as broad audiences simply looking for a great, character-based story,” said AMC president Charlie Collier on Monday. “We’re so proud of and grateful for the amazing team on both sides of the camera who work so hard and is so committed to making this a unique programming event.”
The series’ October 31st, 2010 series premiere drew 5.3 million viewers and a 2.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, the largest audience for any series premiere on cable last year.

Jay-Z, Kanye West sued by songwriter

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: In a suit filed in an Illinois U.S. District Court on Friday, musician Syl Johnson alleged that rappers Kanye West and Jay-Z pinched one of his songs. Specifically, Johnson’s suit accuses the music moguls of sampling his 1967 song “Different Strokes” in their recent collaboration “Watch the Throne.”
But, according to Johnson, there’s more than simple unauthorized usage at play—he says the pair had asked to sample the song for a different track for West’s album, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” but Johnson denied them. Pieces of “Different Strokes” allegedly showed up later in the song “Watch The Throne.”
It gets more complicated. The filing states that the defendants claim that rights to use the track were granted lawfully from an entity called the Numero Uno Group, who Johnson now says had no authority to grant these rights. However, it seems that rights to “Different Strokes” had been granted to other artists previously. Michael Jackson, Kid Rock, and Wil Smith have all used the song in the past.
