This is it. The end of the summer box office season and three releases aimed at three different demos are set to split their cash evenly at $15 million apiece per media pundits.

Leading the fray is Robert Rodriguez/Ethan Maniquis’ high-octane actioner “Machete” starring Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba and Lindsay Lohan. The Fox film is tracking well among Latinos and men and is receiving a wonderful 70% approval from Tomatometer critics. “Machete,” which was featured in a faux trailer in the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez horror-thriller hybrid “Grindhouse” follows an ex Mexican cop, transplanted in the U.S., who slashes away at his enemies in an effort to clear his name after being framed for the assassination of a politician. The story is set against the backdrop of the tense U.S.-Mexico border debate.

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone exclaims “This unholy mess replaces the artful ambition of (George Clooney’s) ‘The American’ with torture, blood spray, kinky sex, twisted fun and a bizarro critique of U.S. policy on illegal immigration.”

Hollywood News critic Anthony D’Alessandro also loved “Machete” heralding it as “the best action film of the summer, sniping ‘Salt’ in its twists and kicking Adam McKay’s ‘The Other Guys’ in the cajones with its comedy.”

Getting a leg up on the competition, Focus Features released George Clooney’s $20 million Italian-western “The American” on Wednesday. “American” follows a hitman on the lam from Swedish killers in a Abruzzo, Italy medieval town. “American” has already cashed in $1.67 million in its first day. Pic is directed by Danish helmer Anton Corbijn. Critics are also giving “American” a thumbs up with a 60% fresh score per Rotten Tomatoes. Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News says that “American” is “a movie as coiled as a snake and as still as a sleepy villa, is the rare grownup thriller that knows the link between peace and danger and the tension that comes from both.”

Hollywood News’ D’Alessandro also adored Clooney in the film saying that the actor “captures the complexity of his feelings throughout each crevice of his face” and “executes his less is more style with sublime grace.” Older adults are the shoe-in crowd for “American.”

Last, Drew Barrymore and Justin Long will give moviegoers another shot at romantic comedy after audiences deep-sixed Jennifer Aniston’s “The Switch” two weeks ago. Priced at $32 million, “Going the Distance” looks to profit off of females. Vying to play off their real-life relationship, Barrymore and Long portray a couple, separated by the San Francisco and New York that they live in, who aim to make good on their long-distance affair.

Of the three films, critics are a bit snobbish toward “Distance,” giving it a 45% rotten on the Tomatometer. Slate’s Dana Stevens nit-picks “There’s just not quite enough to the movie: not enough jokes, not enough obstacles, not enough sex.” Warner Bros./New Line is releasing “Distance.”

HollywoodNews.com: He’ll be playing one of the youngest, most controversial internet billionaires this fall season, but actor Jesse Eisenberg would just prefer to wait before he watches his portrayal of Facebook exec Mark Zuckerberg in Sony’s “The Social Network.”

Ironically, Eisenberg fits the bill for Zuckerberg: both are “nebbish, introverted and quietly confident” per MTV News.

“One of the interesting aspects of my character was disengagement, so the character is kind of a little aloof and emotionally, really quite reserved,” adds Eisenberg.

“I don’t like to watch the movies I’ve been in when they first come out because to me it’s only disappointing, even if the movies are great,” said Eisenberg. “I’ve gotten to be in some great movies, but I feel personally disappointed with myself, so I like to wait until the initial attention dies down and it’s a little more comfortable to watch them.”

In locking the personality of Zuckerberg, both Eisenberg and Fincher endured hundreds of takes.

“Why actors love working with him (Fincher) and why I loved working with him is because you try a scene in 200 different ways, you know he is able to edit together several different performances for each role,” the actor exclaimed about his director.

MTV News got the chance to speak with Eisenberg, 26, who has been balancing his time between the action-comedy production “30 Minutes or Less” in Grand Rapids, Michigan and finishing his undergrad anthropology degree.

“Social Network” bows October 1 and is already generating award season buzz. The film about the rocky founding of Facebook among Harvard’s white collars was directed by David Fincher (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) and written by Aaron Sorkin from Ben Mezrich’s bestseller “The Accidental Billionaires.”

HollywoodNews.com: Eminem has made his comeback and he is ready to stay for the long haul. Not only has his latest album, “Recovery,” gone double platinum, but his single “Love the Way You Lie” that features Rihanna is still continuing to dominate the charts.

For the seventh week in a row, the song has held at the number one position on “Billboard’s” Hot 100 singles chart, reports Billboard. Katy Perry comes in a close second with her single “Teenage Dream,” but is still not enough to kick Eminem and Rihanna off the gold medal block.

Eminem’s even got Kim Kardashian tweting his lyrics, so he must be on the right track.

HollywoodNews.com: Lindsay Lohan is no stranger to rehab and it looks like it has just inspired her father, Michael Lohan, to take matters into his own hands and help other people.

Since moving to the Los Angeles area to be closer to Lindsay, he now wants to start a “faith-based” rehab facility, according to US Magazine. Since he is no stranger to addiction and watching his daughter spin out of control, one thing is clear is that he’s seen the worst of people. He said, “After seeing what my daughter, myself and other people I know have been through, it has led me to realize this is my calling and purpose in life.”

However, the facility will not employ doctors and will be a rehab center that “focuses on mind, body and soul. It is a spiritual retreat.” He adds, “the basis of the rehab will be that there is a God; that good conquers evil; that the best way to live is to treat others like you want to be treated; and treat your body like a temple.”

HollywoodNews.com: Liam Neeson is planning to work with his “A-Team” director Joe Carnahan once again.

Carnahan has written a script with Ian Mackenzie Jeffers entitled “The Grey” that’s essentially a man vs. nature film. Jeffers also wrote the short story that the film is based upon.

In “Grey,” Neeson leads a group of pipeline workers in the Alaska wilderness after their plane crashes. Relentless to make it home to the woman he loves, Neeson and co. must deal with a pack of wolves along the way.

Ridley and Tony Scott are producing with Carnahan looking to shoot early next year once he lands more cast members.

“The A-Team” bombed at the domestic box office making just over $77 million from a lofty budget of $110 million. Apparently, U.S. moviegoers didn’t want to see the big screen version of the ‘80s TV show.

HollywoodNews.com: Burgeoning feature film leading man Jon Hamm and his girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt are looking to fast track her script “Friends With Kids.”

Empire Online describes the plot as an exploration of how couples’ friendships change once they have children. Apparently, Hamm and Westfeldt are looking to hook Anne Hathaway and “Saturday Night Live’s” Kristen Wiig to join the film.

No financing is in place yet.

Westfeldt is known for playing the lead role in “Kissing Jessica Stein” as well as her onscreen work in “Ira & Abby.”

Hollywood sees Hamm as the next George Clooney. This fall he’ll be appearing in Ben Affleck’s crime drama “The Town” due out on September 17. He’s also headlining Zack Snyder’s “Suckerpunch” due out from Warner Bros. in the spring.

Hamm also loves to dabble in comedy. It’s not unusual for him to break outside his understated straight guy roles to play the fool: During the Emmy intro, he took dance tips from Betty White. Also, he’s revered by fans for his turn as Lex Luther in the Funny or Die short “Lex Luther Bailout.”

HollywoodNews.com: Catherine Zeta Jones has rallied against the doctors who failed to spot her husband Michael Douglas’s throat cancer. The actor had repeatedly complained of neck and ear pain before he was diagnosed, The Sun reports.

“Early summer I had a really sore throat. I went through a litany of doctors and tests and they didn’t find anything,” Douglas revealed.

“It makes me furious they didn’t detect it earlier,” Zeta Jones said. “He sought every option and nothing was found. I knew something was up. He knew something was up,” she explained.

This week the ‘Wall Street’ star began an eight-week course of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The actress has described her pain at watching her husband of ten years undergo the gruelling treatment.

“I know maybe I should be stronger, but emotionally I just don’t want to see that. The hardest part is seeing his fatigue, because Michael is never tired,” she said.

Douglas says he has an 80% chance of beating the disease, declaring, “I’m treating this as curable. It’s a fight. I’ll beat this.”
