Andy Griffith to be honored by TV Land

HollywoodNews.com: TV Land will honor the life and work of beloved actor Andy Griffith, who passed away today at the age of 86, with blocks of programming highlighting his most treasured work, “The Andy Griffith Show.” On Wednesday, July 4th from 8am-1pm ET/PT and Saturday and Sunday, July 7th and 8th from 11am to 8pm ET/PT, TV Land will air some of the most memorable episodes in marathons of “The Andy Griffith Show.” The TV Land Facebook page (www.facebook.com/tvland) will also pay tribute to Andy, celebrating some of his best TV moments.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Andy Griffith,” said Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land. “His contributions to the entertainment industry and his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor will live forever in the minds and hearts of generations of television viewers past, present and yet to come. The entire TV Land staff will miss him and our thoughts go out to his family.”
“The Andy Griffith Show” has long been a part of TV Land’s history and has been in the network’s line-up for over a decade. In 2003, the network erected a statue in Raleigh, North Carolina, depicting the famous opening sequence featuring Andy Griffith and a young Ron Howard in their roles of Sheriff Andy and Opie Taylor walking hand-in-hand. Then in 2004, the network unveiled a replica of the bronze statue in Mount Airy, North Carolina, Andy Griffith’s birthplace and the town after which Mayberry was modeled. Also in 2004, the cast was honored with the Legend Award at the 2nd Annual “TV Land Awards.” Additionally, the network has produced two retrospective specials on the series, “TV Land’s Top 10: The Andy Griffith Show” and “Inside TV Land: The Andy Griffith Show.”
Andy Griffith, born in 1926 in North Carolina, has been a part of the American TV landscape for nearly 60 years, first appearing on popular programs such as “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “The Steve Allen Show” in the early 1950s. In 1960, CBS premiered the series that bore his name, “The Andy Griffith Show.” For eight years, he starred as Andy Taylor, the kind-hearted Sheriff of Mayberry, alongside then-child actor Ron Howard (“Happy Days”) as his son Opie and hilarious character actor, Don Knotts (“Three’s Company”), as Deputy Barney Fife. Andy also went on to star in the hit series “Matlock” for nine seasons.

Universal teases The Flintstones a year in advance…

By Scott Mendelson
HollywoodNews.com: It was no secret that Universal was planning a big-screen adaptation of The Flintstones for the summer of 1994. I remember actually being on the Universal lot while visiting a cousin in the winter of 1993 so I could shoot portions of a Bar Mitzvah movie (long story… another time) and being told by the Universal guy that if we got caught to say “We’re here working on stuff for The Flintstones… nobody knows what the plot is yet anyway.” But a six months later, as my dad and I watched the lights go down for our advance-night 10:00pm screening of Jurassic Park (arguably the best single movie going experience of my life… ask me about it next summer), we were stunned that Universal had already cooked up a teaser for the seemingly un-shot and certainly unfinished Flintstones feature. As you can see, it was basically just a bouncing ball version of the theme song, climaxing with an in-costume John Goodman screaming ‘Yabba-dabba-doo!’ at the top of his lungs. Let me tell you, the entire audience roared with applause and I admit I was caught up in the infectious excitement for a project I couldn’t really care less about. That was the start of something new.
I saw that preview on June 10th, 1993, just under a full year before the May 27th, 1994 Memorial Day weekend release date. I’m sure there were cases in the 1970s and early 1980s of big movies being teased well in advance because they weren’t being released wide to every theater at the same time. But in the wide-release, ‘coming soon to theaters everywhere’ era, this was a first. It was a calculated marketing campaign that started a year before the film was to be released. The Flintstones were the first to try such a long-dart shot, but they were not the last. Sony debuted the first Godzilla teaser with Men In Black over the 4th of July weekend in 1997, just under a year before the film’s Memorial Day 1998 debut (ironically, they would not debut a real trailer until April 3rd, 1998, attached to prints of Mercury Rising, just 6 weeks before the film’s release). Disney debuted a powerful and moving teaser for Pearl Harbor a year before its Memorial Day 2001 release, attached to prints of I [...]

Weekend Box Office

HollywoodNews.com: The Autobots and Decepticons ruled the box office yet again, as the Middle East-occupation parable grossed another $47 million over the weekend. That was a drop of 54%, which was smaller than the 61% drop for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen which had the Fourth of July holiday weekend to theoretically bump it up.
It was a larger drop than the 47% second-weekend drop for the original Transformers on this same weekend back in 2007. In terms of actual dollars, Transformers: Dark of the Moon (review) had a larger second weekend than both prior Transformers pictures, despite opening slightly less than the second film ($180 million in six days versus $200 million in five days last time). It now has $261 million in the domestic till, with an international total that should be around or at $600 million today (which would be a record twelve days). It broke $500 million on Thursday, becoming the fastest film to do so in history (nine days).
While it opened smaller than the last picture, it relative quality (it is a more audience pleasing spectacle than the last) is allowing it to slowly catch up (Transformers 2 had $293 million at this point in its run). So far, it most resembles the 2004 July 4th contender, Spider-Man 2, which also had a $180 million six-day start and ended weekend two with $256 million (it ended up with $373 million). Barring a complete collapse or faster screen loss due to a crowded marketplace, the picture seems destined to pull about $390 million domestic while becoming the second film this year (after Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) to cross $1 billion worldwide. The big question is how it handles Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part II, which opens next weekend and could theoretically also join the $1 billion club this year.
