HollywoodNews.com: Scarlett Johansson may not have nabbed her fav role of a female astronaut in Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity,” but she’s working with Cameron Crowe.
An even better deal.
Johansson will star opposite Matt Damon in the director’s true-life drama “We Bought a Zoo.”
The Hollywood Reporter had the news.
Based on the memoir by Benjamin Mee, “Zoo” follows the author (Damon) who used his life savings to buy a dilapidated zoo of 200 exotic animals in Great Britain. Mee’s wife (Johansson) during this time was battling brain cancer. With the help of his children, Mee balanced life and resurrected the zoo.

Natalie Portman one of the actresses being considered for ‘Great Gatsby’
HollywoodNews.com: Lisbeth Salander, the femme astronaut in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi film – highly coveted roles for actresses in Hollywood. You can add the part of Daisy in Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” remake which is ramping up at Sony.
Deadline reports that while Luhrmann wants Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby) and Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway) from his recent workshop reading, he’s looking for other actresses to play the part of Daisy, Gatsby’s love interest. In the workshop, Rebecca Hall of “The Town” read for the role and she still might be a contender.
However, Deadline learns that the list includes: Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson.
Daisy was portrayed in the 1974 film by Mia Farrow, while Robert Redford played Gatsby. The film, distributed by Paramount, generated an estimated $27 million at the box office.

Sandra Bullock setting up marital drama at Warner Bros.
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Have you ever heard the famous bit of homespun Texas wisdom, “You dance with the one who brung you?” Bet Sandra Bullock, who has adopted the Lone Star state, knows it, so it makes sense to learn the actress is sticking with Warner Bros., the studio that successfully guided Bullock to her first Oscar with last year’s “The Blind Side.”
Coincidentally, Warner has attached Bullock to a project that reunites her with Anne Fletcher, the director who helped power “The Proposal” to $163.9 million for Buena Vista. It’s an easy gamble betting on Fletcher and Bullock’s chemistry, though. Rumor has it they’re also developing a bounty hunter comedy with “Proposal” eye candy Ryan Reynolds over at Universal.
As for Bullock and Fletcher’s Warner project, the Hollywood Reporter notes it will be a “contemporary-set project … described as being in the vein of ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and Paul Mazursky’s 1978 film ‘An Unmarried Woman,’ which starred Jill Clayburgh as a woman confronting a crumbling marriage.”
That certainly sounds like material Bullock could sink her teeth into, given her recent personal issues. No word on how this deal will affect other projects Bullock has been circling, including the lead role in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi drama “Gravity” and an adaptation of “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” with Tom Hanks.

Natalie Portman circling “Alien” prequel as Lindelof’s script earns raves
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: In the long run, saying goodbye to “Lost” might be the best thing to have happened to Damon Lindelof.
The celebrated co-creator of the groundbreaking island drama has moved on to some truly mouth-watering projects since departing “Lost.” He co-wrote “Cowboys & Aliens” for director Jon Favreau. He’s tackling the “Star Trek” sequel for (I’m assuming) J.J. Abrams to direct. And now word is breaking that Lindelof’s screenplay for Ridley Scott’s planned “Alien” prequel is earning raves at 20th Century Fox.
Vulture reports that the studio is flipping out over Lindelof’s treatment for assorted reasons. Though details are being kept under wraps, Lindelof reportedly has penned a PG-13 “Alien” adventure, and has come up with a way to reduce costs by reducing expensive, effects-laden set pieces.
“This is some good news for Fox, which has almost nothing resembling a blockbuster in the hopper for the summer of 2012, and could certainly stand to reinvigorate a wildly popular multi-part sci-fi franchise,” Vulture writes.
The report goes on to say that Natalie Portman is at the top of the list of actresses hoping to take the ride with Sir Ridley, and that “Dragon Tattoo” actress Noomi Rapace also is being considered for the role. It’s interesting that Portman once was circling Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity,” another sci-fi flick, so maybe she just has a hankering for a space project.
Finally, the report says Scott’s film isn’t a reboot of the franchise – like this summer’s “Predators” – but should be viewed as Scott’s second “Alien” film that somehow continues the franchise with the original filmmaker’s voice.
The as-yet-untitled “Alien” prequel is due out in 2012. More details as they emerge.

Sandra Bullock might float ‘Gravity’
HollywoodNews.com: The new hot role for actresses around Hollywood after David Fincher’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”? The femme astronaut in Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity.”
There’s been a line of contenders for the part: Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman and Angelina Jolie. Jolie and Portman have passed. But the new chick in negotiations? Sandra Bullock. The actress is also in talks for the Tom Hanks title “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.”
Why has this search gone on for so long? Warner Bros. needs an actress who can open this $80 million film and believe their Oscar-winning “Blind Side” gal is the one.
“Gravity” will be in 3D and per Variety, “revolves around two astronauts fighting to survive on a remote space station after satellite debris wipes out the rest of the crew and destroys most of the station.”
Cuaron wrote “Gravity” with his son, Jonas. Apparently, the only actor who has been confirmed all along has been Robert Downey, Jr. whose character has a cameo in the film.
David Heyman of “Harry Potter” fame is producing “Gravity.”

Awards Season Roundup: Brits honor Boyle, “Secretariat” targets faith-based crowds
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: HollywoodNews.com’s Awards Season Roundup collects insights from around the Internet on films that are running in the Oscar race.
“127 Hours” director Danny Boyle will receive the BFI Fellowship next month, the highest accolade handed out by the British Film Institute.
Boyle’s film also is competing with Mike Leigh’s “Another Year,” Kelly Reichhardt’s “Meek’s Cutoff,” Catherine Breillat’s “The Sleeping Beauty” and others for the BFI London Film Festival’s top prize. Patricia Clarkson chairs this year’s Best Film jury. Winners will be announced early next month.
Following a trail blazed by “The Blind Side,” Disney is courting Christian groups and faith-based organizations for Randall Wallace’s “Secretariat.” The film, which opens Oct. 8, also is getting some decent awards buzz, having just received the Critics Choice seal of distinction from the Broadcast Film Critics Association (which hands out the Critics Choice Movie Awards each January).
While still riding high on the buzz surrounding her “Black Swan” performance, Natalie Portman reportedly is looking ahead to future projects, and has entered “active negotiations” with Warner Bros. to star in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi thriller “Gravity.” It’s also being rumored that Portman is up for the Lois Lane role in the planned “Superman” reboot, but I think that’s only because her “Black Swan” director, Darren Aronofsky, has been linked to the high-flying project, as well.
This is an old interview, but relevant given the fact that we just saw the teaser trailer for Joel and Ethan Coen’s “True Grit” remake. Back in 2009, Ethan told IGN that their version would be closer to the original book and not to the 1969 John Wayne film. “I think it’s much funnier than the movie was so I think, unfortunately, they lost a lot of humor … It also ends differently than the movie did,” he said. And finally, Paul Haggis’ “The Next Three Days,” with Russell Crowe, has a new poster.

Natalie Portman offered lead role in Cuaron’s “Gravity”
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Angelina Jolie’s loss might be Natalie Portman’s gain.
The actress, currently earning raves for her turn in Darren Aronofsky’s demonic “Black Swan,” reportedly has been offered the lead role in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi epic “Gravity,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. The role had been offered to Jolie numerous times, and the A-lister reportedly passed twice.
The article says Portman “is expected to read the latest version of the script this week and make her decision shortly.” She would play a female astronaut struggling to get home after space debris collides with her station. Portman would join Robert Downey Jr., who has accepted a minor role. Cuaron aims to shoot in January for a 2012 release.
I’m thrilled that Cuaron is going after Portman, and that the actress continues to challenge herself by working with creative forces like Aronofsky, Anderson, Nichols and Forman.
“Black Swan,” meanwhile, plays Toronto this week and opens everywhere on Dec. 1.

TIFF ’10: Javier Bardem and Alejandro González Iñárritu are “Biutiful”
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: We continue to preview anticipated titles screening at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival in our “Road to Toronto” feature.
The fest kicks off on Sept. 9, and HollywoodNews.com will be on the ground bringing you reviews, interviews, and a clearer glimpse at the ever-shifting Oscar race.
To read our previous preview columns, punch “TIFF” into our search window. Today, we’re digging in to a difficult, emotional drama that divided audiences and critics at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival last May, but recently secured a major victory when Roadside Attractions acquired its U.S. distribution rights.
Biutiful
The Plot: Tormented family man Uxbal (Javier Bardem) struggles with present-day problems in Barcelona while confronting the sins of his checkered past.
The Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu (“Babel,” “21 Grams,” “Amores perros”)
The Cast: Javier Bardem, Blanca Portillo, Ruben Ochandiano, Felix Cubero, Martina Garcia
The Scoop: Iñárritu reportedly tells a streamlined story of one man’s fight for redemption after playing with puzzling narratives and plot trickery in previous pictures like “Babel” and “Amores perros.” Mexican fans of Iñárritu who feared (unnecessarily) that this valued member of cinema’s “Three Amigos” – with Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro – had gone Hollywood may rejoice that the storyteller is back working in his native language for the first time since “perros.” The rest of us can anticipate what is supposed to be a breathtaking performance from the reliable Bardem in the lead role.
Awards Potential: The film’s best bet appears to be Bardem, who took home the Best Actor prize for “Biutiful” at Cannes, and could ride a wave of support throughout the Oscar race. Counting against him? He just won an Academy Award in 2008 for his chilling performance in Joel and Ethan Coen’s “No Country for Old Men.” But that’s unlikely to cost him a nomination if his “Biutiful” performance is as good as we’ve heard.

Blake Lively’s Serena lives on ‘Gossip Girl,’ actress balances film work
HollywoodNews.com: The rumors surrounding Blake Lively’s departure from CW’s hit drama “Gossip Girl” have been squashed.
Despite Lively being a highly coveted film actress now after her turn in “Green Lantern,” due out next summer, “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Schwartz took to Twitter to announce that he wasn’t going to kill off her socialite character Serena van der Woodsen.
Schwartz exclaimed, “Have to respond. No truth to rumours that BL (Blake Lively) requested to have Serena killed. All is well. Gossip Girl Season 4 back on September 13.”
It is rumored that Warner Bros. wants Lively for the role of a female astronaut in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi film “Gravity.”
Lively will appear next in Ben Affleck’s crime drama “The Town” based on the Chuck Hogan novel “Prince of Thieves.”
IMDB describes “Town” as “the tale of four men — thieves, rivals and friends — being hunted through the streets of Boston by a tenacious FBI agent and a woman who might destroy them all.”
To date, Blake Lively’s prolific short list of film credits have been relegated to tween and teen fare, i.e. “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” franchise and “Accepted.”

Did Blake Lively want Scarlett Johansson’s role?
HollywoodNews.com: Although Blake Lively will be starring alongside Scarlett Johansson’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, in ‘Green Lantern,’ it isn’t Johansson’s husband she’s after, but possibly a movie role.
According to NYDailyNews.com, after Lively heard that Johansson verbally agreed to star in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi survival flick, Gravity, Lively decided to try to go after the role that would have her co-starring with Robert Downey Jr.
However, despite allegedly approaching Cuaron before Johansson has signed any sort of deal, the director was set on having Johansson for the role.
