The Hunger Games topped the box office for the third time in a row

HollywoodNews.com: Whatever my issues with The Hunger Games in terms of its quality as a film, its continued box office might can only be a good thing. Considering the current trend of studios basically remaking/rebooting/rehashing every remotely popular property over the last thirty years, the fact that this NEW adaptation from a NEW novel is going to be among the top three grossing films of the year by a healthy margin can only be a good lesson. Anyway, The Hunger Games topped the box office for the third time in a row this weekend, dropping a perfectly reasonable 43% in weekend three, for a weekend haul of $33.5 million. This gives the film a massive $302 million in seventeen days, which is the second-largest such haul for a film outside of summer in history. That’s the fifth-biggest seventeen-day total in history, and 11 days ahead of Alice In Wonderland, the closest non-summer competitor and just two days behind Avatar. Forget Twilight comparisons, it’s already passed Eclipse, which is the highest-grossing entry in the series. And forget the majority of the Harry Potter series, as it’s $14 million away from surpassing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and it’s already tied with the $303 million 17-day total of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part II with significantly larger second and third weekends to boot. At this point, it’s playing like Spider-Man 2 and the last Harry Potter film, with stronger weekends but lighter weekday grosses. The second Spidey pick ended its third weekend with $302 million and ended its domestic haul with $373 million, while Harry Potter 7.2 ended with $381 million. Factoring a rather busy April and the coming summer onslaught, that’s as good a place to predict as to where the first The Hunger Games ends up.
The top opener, one of two wide releases, was American Reunion. The unasked-for sequel is the fourth theatrical entry in the American Pie series but the eighth chapter counting the four direct-to-DVD films. This ‘most of you need a paycheck because none of you really broke out’ rehash opened to $21 million, which is almost identical to the $19 million debut this time last year of Scream 4. To be fair, at least some of the cast has worked relatively steadily since 1999, with Alyson Hannigan going from one [...]

“American Reunion” has a sock, a tub and a red-band trailer

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Hide your apple pies. Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan and the “American Pie” gang are back in action for “American Reunion,” and Universal has released a red-band trailer to re-educate you on Biggs’ Jim character and his, um, problems in the bedroom.
We have it below:

That poor sock. That poor kid! Still, pretty witty for what has devolved into a crude sex franchise over the course of its multiple sequels. The clip gives me hope that “Reunion” will return to the clever humor of the original “Pie” film, which tapped into teenage frustration but still paid attention to character-based humor.
“American Reunion” opens everywhere on April 6, 2012.

Tara Reid gets the lowest pay for ‘American Pie’ reunion

HollywoodNews.com: Apparently Tara Reid isn’t all that crucial to the ‘American Pie’ reunion film as she has reportedly received the lowest pay of the cast.
Reid reportedly agreed to do the film for $250,000, states UsMagazine.com. Jason Biggs and Seann William Scott, on the other hand, will make $5 million each off the film.
Alyson Hannigan and Eugene Levy will also score big with $3 million each while the other stars will get somewhere between $500,000 and $750,000.
However, a studio rep has reportedly commented that the figures are inaccurate, but did not explain how.
Do you think she deserves the lowest pay?

Natasha Lyonne orders a slice of “American Reunion”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: More “Pie” veterans keep coming back for the planned “American Reunion.” Though she had a small part in the original teen sex comedy “American Pie,” 32-year-old Natasha Lyonne has agreed to reprise her role of Jessica for the franchise’s fourth installment, Access Hollywood reports.
Lyonne, who has continued to work in smaller films, joins “Pie” alums Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Biggs, Eugene Levy, Tara Reid, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Mena Suvari and Chris Klein in the sequel, which currently is filming in Atlanta.
As Access Hollywood notes, the actress has become more known for her off-screen exploits than her on-screen roles. She “pleaded guilty to driving to driving under the influence of alcohol after she drove a rented car onto a sidewalk in Miami Beach, Flor. in August 2001,” and later was “charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass and harassment in December 2004 after she allegedly entered her female neighbor’s apartment and threatened to ‘sexually molest’ the woman’s dog.”
That sounds like it could be a plot twist in a “Pie” sequel, actually.
“American Reunion” will be in theaters on April 6, 2012.

Alyson Hannigan spills “American Reunion” plot details

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: So far, the entire cast of the original “American Pie” films have agreed to return for Universal’s comedy sequel “American Reunion,” from Jason Biggs and Seann William Scott to Tara Reid and Mena Suvari.
Up until this point, however, we didn’t know what to expect beyond gratuitous nudity, toilet humor and one or two lessons about the difficulties of growing older. But “How I Met Your Mother” star Alyson Hannigan, who was a band camp geek long before she joined that hit sitcom, opened up to EW about plot details, filling in story gaps for the film that’s going to pick up where 2003’s “American Wedding” left off.
“We’ll, we’re still married,” she said of her character and Biggs’ protagonist, the hapless Jim. “And we have a child. So we’re navigating the waters of parenthood and how that changes the dynamics of a relationship. But also they’re going back to their high school reunion and so there’s some nostalgia there of, ‘Aw, remember what we were like when we first met?’ That kind of stuff. It’s really nice.
“I really love that relationship and they’ve stayed true to it,” Hannigan continued. “The great thing about this franchise is that, of course, there’s the raunchy humor but here’s also a lot of heart to it. And this fourth movie does not miss the boat on that at all.”
“American Reunion” filming is underway, targeting an April 6, 2012 release date.

Last “American Pie” cast member agrees to “Reunion”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Hail, Hail, the “American Pie” gang’s practically all here for what’s shaping up to be a decent reunion.
Thomas Ian Nicholas, considered to be the last of the original cast members who was still holding out on signing a deal, has agreed to return for “American Reunion,” a sequel being set up at Universal, THR reports.
The actor will join his longtime co-stars Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott, Jason Biggs, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, Chris Klein, Eddie Kaye Thomas and Eugene Levy, who all have agreed to return. Nicholas played Kevin Myers in the “Pie” films, have been out of theaters since 2003.
Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the creative team behind the “Harold & Kumar” film, are writing and directing the sequel, which promises to catch up on the gang as they age, mature, and deal with “Big Chill” types of problems. Oh, and someone will probably stick their junk into a dessert. This is “American Pie,” after all.

“American Reunion” secures a 2012 release date

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Just about every “American Pie” cast member has agreed or is in negotiations to appear in the upcoming “American Reunion,” and now we know when they’ll reunite on screen.
The fourth installment in the surprisingly dependable comedy franchise will arrive in theaters on April 6, 2012, Universal Pictures announced.
No other film has claimed that weekend yet. The strategic date also gives “Reunion” a few weekends to compete before “The Avengers” starts snatching up tickets on May 4.
The last “American” film, 2003’s “American Wedding,” earned $231.4M worldwide, so a sequel probably was inevitable.
Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein and Eugene Levy all have been circling the project. While side players Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid and Mena Suvari are expected to return.

Alyson Hannigan in the mix for “American Reunion”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Of all the “American Pie” veterans, Alyson Hannigan might be the hardest one to lure back for a sequel because, you know, she has a legitimate career.
The award-winning actress currently is cleaning up as an ensemble member of CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother,” so has no real demand to leap to the big screen. But while most may know her for “Mother” or even “Buffy,” Hannigan owes a bit of her success to the “American” franchise, so it makes sense that she’d return for a reunion and pay her respects.
Deadline’s saying Hannigan will join Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Eugene Levy and other “American Pie” alums for “American Reunion.”
But as they point out, Hannigan had some leverage as the story “revolves around her marriage and child with Jason Biggs’ character.”
So the “Pie” franchise is trying to grow up. Not too much, I’m sure, as they’re going to want to appeal to the core, crass audience. Maybe the filmmakers will town the Judd Apatow line? Anyway, I’m glad Hannigan’s on board. She’s a great talent, and the sequel’s instantly better with her involved.
