Production Designer Mimi Gramatky has been elected President of the 2,000-member Art Directors Guild (ADG/IATSE, Local 800), for a three-year term, succeeding Thomas A. Walsh, it was announced today. Also elected for three-year terms are Art Director Jim Wallis as Vice President; Production Designer Cate Bangs as Treasurer; and Art Director Judy Cosgrove as Secretary. Scott Roth continues as ADG’s Executive Director.
Gramatky’s skills reach beyond Production Design into interior and landscape architecture, theatre design, visual FX and animation, documentary filmmaking, and teaching. She has been a member of the ADG Board of Directors and a past member of its Council. Gramatky is a former member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco State University. She has been married for 27 years to Composer/Arranger/Orchestrator Geoff Stradling.

The Art Directors Guild (ADG) tonight announced winners of its 17th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards Presented by BMW in nine categories of film, television, commercials and music videos during black-tie ceremonies at the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. The awards took place before an audience of more than 700, including guild members, industry executives, and press. ADG Council Chair John Shaffner presided over the awards ceremony with Paula Poundstone serving as host for the fourth consecutive year. Due to an illness, Production Designer Herman Zimmerman was an absentee recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award Presented by BMW.
Hall of Fame inductees were Preston Ames, Richard MacDonald, and Edward Stephenson. The Production Designers behind the JAMES BOND franchise, including Sir Ken Adam, Peter Lamont, Allan Cameron and Dennis Gassner were honored for Outstanding Contribution to Cinematic Imagery. The 17th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards were produced by Greg Grande and Raf Lydon.

The first-ever Oscar Roadtrip will kick off on Monday, February 4, in New York City, and over the next three weeks will bring the excitement of the Oscars® to numerous cities across the country. Fans along the way will have a chance to hold an actual Oscar statuette before it arrives on the Hollywood red carpet in time for the 85th Academy Awards® presentation on Sunday, February 24.
Oscar’s journey will be chronicled in videos, photos and blog posts by Oscar Roadtrip reporters Ben Gleib and Angie Greenup on OscarRoadtrip.com, @OscarRoadtrip and Facebook.com/TheAcademy. The pair will hit the nation’s highways for the 21-day journey to some of Oscar’s favorite cities, with a number of stops along the way to be determined by fans via social media. Everyone is invited to follow the progress of the trip, suggest a location for an impromptu Oscar visit and take a picture holding the coveted statuette.
“We created the Oscar Roadtrip to bring the magic and fun of the Oscar ceremony to movie fans across the country,” said Josh Spector, managing director of digital media and marketing for the Academy. “The Oscar Roadtrip makes it possible to share the once-in-a-lifetime thrill that only comes from holding an Oscar statuette.”

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the creation of the Costume Designers Branch. Costume designers had previously been a part of the Designers Branch, which also includes production designers, art directors and set decorators. Academy Governor Jeffrey Kurland will transfer to the newly created branch and eventually be joined by two additional governors.
“History was made at the Board of Governors meeting on Wednesday night with the formation of a Costume Designers Branch,” said Kurland. “Costume designers have waited a long time for recognition with branch status. As a governor representing these designers, I’m thrilled and grateful for the Academy’s support.”
At the same meeting, the governors voted to increase the representation of the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch from one to three governors. Two new governors will be chosen by election later this year to join current governor Leonard Engelman. The Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch, the most recent branch to be created, was formed in 2006.
“I’m looking forward to sharing the task of representing the Academy’s makeup artists and hairstylists with two of my colleagues,” Engelman said. “New governors will bring new ideas, which will help to keep the Academy’s leadership strong and sharp.”
“Congratulations to our members from these essential craft areas. Movies are a visual medium and costume designers, makeup artists, and hairstylists help to create images that tell stories,” said Academy President Hawk Koch. “This recognition is richly deserved.”
These decisions were voted at the regularly scheduled Board meeting on Wednesday, January 23, and will take effect in July after Board elections are held. The new Costume Designers Branch governors and the two new Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch governors will bring the size of the Academy’s Board to 48 members, with three governors representing each of the 16 branches

An impressive array of presenters have signed on to present at the 17th annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards Presented by BMW, set for Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, it was announced by John Shaffner, ADG chairman, and Awards Producers Greg Grande and Raf Lydon.
Set to present are Joelle Carter (Justified, High Fidelity); Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation, film and television director); Walton Goggins (Justified, Django Unchained, Lincoln); Dennis Haysbert (Allstate® commercial, 24, Wreck-It Ralph); Georgia King (The New Normal, Little Dorrit); John C. McGinley (Scrubs, Burn Notice); Jane Seymour (To Live and Let Die, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman); Julie White (Lincoln, Transformers); and Alfre Woodard (True Blood, Memphis Beat). Nine ADG awards for Excellence in Production Design in categories of theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials and music videos, will be presented, along with a Lifetime Achievement Award Presented by BMW to Production Designer Herman Zimmerman. The Cinematic Imagery Award will be presented to the production designers behind the James Bond film franchise. In addition, three legendary Production Designers will be inducted into the ADG Hall of Fame: Preston Ames, Richard MacDonald, and Edward S. Stephenson.

Rounding out our weekend coverage was the third installment in Richard Linklater?s ?Before? series (Before Midnight), which revisits Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine?s (Julie Delpy) protracted love story nine years after the events of Before Sunset.
Day Four also featured a soulful offering of performances from the subjects of early Sundance favorite Twenty Feet From Stardom, and the stirring premiere of the Documentary Premieres film Linsanity

BAFTA Nominations have been announced. Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln leads the nominations. Skyfall, a film we all assumed would do well managed nominations but missed Best Picture. Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi also made a strong showing.
Lincoln receives ten nominations. Les Misérables and Life of Pi are each nominated in nine categories; Skyfall has eight nominations, Argo has seven nominations and Anna Karenina has six. Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty are each nominated five times.
The Master and Amour have four nominations. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Silver Linings Playbook have each been nominated three times. Hitchcock, Rust and Bone, The Imposter and McCullin have two nominations apiece.
Lincoln is nominated in the following categories: Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair. Daniel Day-Lewis is nominated for Leading Actor, Tommy Lee Jones is nominated for Supporting Actor and Sally Field is nominated for Supporting Actress.

Argo and Zero Dark Thirty complete the Best Film lineup. Argo has six other nominations: Ben Affleck is nominated for Director and for Leading Actor and the film is nominated for Adapted Screenplay, Original Music and Editing. Alan Arkin is nominated for Supporting Actor.
Zero Dark Thirty?s other four nominations are for Original Screenplay, Editing, Director for Kathryn Bigelow and Leading Actress for Jessica Chastain.
Judi Dench and Javier Bardem are nominated as Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor for Skyfall. The film is also nominated for Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound and Outstanding British Film.
Anna Karenina is nominated for Outstanding British Film, as well as Original Music, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair.
Quentin Tarantino is nominated for Director and Original Screenplay for Django Unchained. The film is nominated for Sound and for Editing and Christoph Waltz is nominated for Supporting Actor.
